    Error number: 0x80090008

I receive the Error number: 0x80090008 when trying a manual windows update
    with the message
The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are
    trying to view.

I have checked my event viewer and the following Windows Update Agent Error
Event ID 16 and have received this message since the 9/12/2009.
The last time windows update worked was on the 09/12/2009

SInce you've failed to include which edition of Windows this is
occurring in if the OS is XP, Win2K, or WS2K8, see:

Automatic Updates Cannot Download Updates and Event ID 16 Is Logged

    Re: Error number: 0x80090008

Sorry my OS is XP home edition.

I tried http://support.microsoft.com/kb/824208 but could not find a problem.

I still get the 0x8009008 error on the Microsoft update site when clicking
on either the Express or Custom Button

and the Windows Update Agent Error Event ID 16 still. since 12/12/2009 not
as I first stated as 9/12/2009

As I have not received any updates since 9/12/2009

    Re: Error number: 0x80090008

Please do another attempt at updating. When the error appears close
    Internet Explorer.
Open the WindowsUpdate.log and scroll all the way to the bottom for the
    most recent entries.
Copy and paste at least the last 50 or so lines into your reply, please.

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file

    *** Is a 3rd party firewall being used ? ***

Is this system on a wireless network ? If so, try connecting it directly
to the modem and see if that resolves the error.

The Protocl Talker (PT) on your system can connect to the update server
but can not communicate it's Cookie content, recover the Cookie content,
nor refresh it. Thus the system can not do a search for updates.

So, the question is ... is 3rd party software creating the Cookie issue
or is it related to the TimeZone setting that the system is sending to
    the update server ?

If your geographic region is not in the Greenwich Mean Time zone, then
that's where the issue stems from.

    Re: Error number: 0x80090008

I have checked that I am on GMT London and resync. the time and that is ok

I notice there is another 0x8009008 problem reported on the on 12/31/2009

This only seems to of happened after the updates I had on the 12/09/2009
    KB970430
    KB974318
    KB976325
    KB973904
    KB976416
    KB974392
    KB971737
    KB890830

    Re: Error number: 0x80090008

From that list of updates the only I can see causing the communication
    issue is KB970430.

What is the installed security software (antivirus/security suite, popup
and cookie blocker) and are any 3rd party toolbars installed (Google, etc) ?

Suggest you delete IE's Temporary Internet Files and flush all Cookies.
Then see if the system can search for updates at Windows Update.
FWIW, there's another thread with the same error code, 0x80090008, on
this newsgroup. It's not a common error, that I do know.

    Re: Error number: 0x80090008

Norton Internet Security installed 2010 24/11/2009

    Norton third party toolbar

IE's Temporary Internet Files and flushed all Cookies "now empty"

    Still the same problem.

I notice when I obtain the Microsoft Update page with the Express or Custom
buttons on the left hand side under Options "Restore hidden udtes" is
    greyed out
and unable to select. (cannot remember if this is only available when you
    get through?)

NIS includes a firewall (i.e., "a third-party firewall"). You do NOT want
the Norton fireall *and* the Windows Firewall enabled, only one of them.

    Have you purchased NIS 2010?

What anti-virus application was installed before you install NIS 2010 on 24
    Nov-09?

Has another Norton application or a McAfee application ever been installed
on this machine (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you
    bought it)?

I've got a third contender in one of the MSE forums =>
    http://social.answers.microsoft.com/...-1b077d0c7b19/

Is disabling it enough? Is even uninstalling it enough? <eg>
E.g. which ones need special tools to fix their broken
    uninstall procedures?

    Re: Error number: 0x80090008

I only run with the Norton Firewall, MS firewall switched off.

    I have purchased NS 2010

    NS2009 anti-virus application was installed before 24- Nov-09

I did a complete uninstall and also ran the Norton tool to remove any
outstanding bits and could not find any left over files after that.

When I bought the PC I bought a copy of Norton and that is all I have
    used..

Since the only other threads with the same error code were system's
using 3rd party firewalls, suggest you disable it, enable the native XP
firewall, and then rebuild the winsock stack.
Open a Command Prompt, type in the following, and then press Enter after
    each command

    netsh winsock reset
    exit

After the first command you should get a message that the system needs
to be restarted to complete the operation.
Restart now with the native XP firewall enabled and see if the system
    can search for updates now.

If you uninstall NIS 2010 & reboot, enable the Windows Firewalll, run the
Norton Removal Tool & reboot again, does the behavior persist?

    Now try a Reset: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058

    I have
    1) Disabled Norton Smart Firewall

    2) Reinstated the native Windows Firewall
    3) used command prompt
    4) used netsh winsock reset
    5) request to restart
    6)exit and then restarted

    7) tried to use windows update and using the express button I receive the
    same error 0x80090008

The NS2010 was installed on 24 Nov 2009 and I did not have any problems
before the last updates I received.
This only seems to of happened after the updates I had on the 12/09/2009
    KB970430
    KB974318
    KB976325
    KB973904
    KB976416
    KB974392
    KB971737
    KB890830

I have uninstalled NIS2010 rebooted, Enabled the Windows Firewall and then un
the Norton Removal tool and have rebooted .
and Yes the error is still 0x80090008

Error message when you try to install updates by using the Windows Update or
    Microsoft Update Web site: "0x80004002":
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/956708

....but running a Reset would have done all of those Resolutions anyway.

You may be seeing the (continuing?) effects of a hijackware infection, my
    friend.

    Is WinXP SP3 installed?

Have you ever done a Repair Install or a clean install of Windows?
