If I have a Highjack then as I have run NIS2010, Malwarebytes, also
SUPERAntiSpyware
it must be something special
Win XP SP3 is installed
and NO I have never done a Repair Install or a clean install of Windows?
NB: If you had no anti-virus application installed or the subscription had
expired *when the machine first got infected* and/or your subscription has
since expired and/or the machine's not been kept fully-patched at Windows
Update, don't waste your time with any of the below: Format & reinstall
Windows. A Repair Install will NOT help!

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:

NB: Run the FULL scan, not the QUICK scan! You may need to download the
MSRT on a non-infected machine, then transfer MRT.EXE to the infected
machine and rename it to SCAN.EXE before running it.
2a. WinXP => Run the Windows Live Safety Center's 'Protection' scan (only!)
in Safe Mode with Networking, if need be:

3. Now run a thorough check for hijackware, including posting requested logs
in an appropriate forum, not here.

If these procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting
this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA or Geek Squad) computer repair shop.
I had the same error and I couln't figure out which of the last Update was
responsible.
I tried different ways to fix Window Update (fix-it, ).
I checked with regmon the <access denied> key without success
Restore to 8/12/2009 temporarly maked WU working. But I still had the same
problem after updates are installed.
Finally, i came with the solution (the one I wanted to avoid). The following
procedure assume that once you installed Service Pack 3 on your system
(coming from SP1 or SP2).
1. Get a copy of Service Pack 3 from microsoft
(http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en )
To unistall SP3 may cause instability of your system
2. Secure your work station (disconnect network)
3. Uninstall XP service Pack 3
4. Uninstall kb976098 (Time zone Update) it may cause conflict in next update
5. reinstall service Pack 3 from CD
6. reinstall Iexplore (7 or 8) (uninstalling is impossible you have to
overwrite the existing install)
7. Connect your network
8. Launch Window Update
9. Update your system (36 updates for me)
BE CAREFUL: Uninstalling Service Pack 3 may cause instability to your system
and also to the Apps your installed after SP3. Probably you will need to
reinstall some of them. I had nothing to reinstall after this procedure,
Everything seems to work as normal.
Still can't understand why if works but now it works
