| Re: Microsoft updates not installing
* Were any error codes generated when the updates failed to install? * For the first one, KB953297, download and run this tool first: Description of the Patch Registration Cleanup Tool http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976220 http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en You will need to download the *specific* tool for the architecture of the system. Open System in the Control Panel. In the right frame, under System, check 'System type'. That is the architecture of the system. If it shows 32-bit, the system is x86. x64 is self explanatory. NOTE: Do NOT download PatchRegCleanup-ia64.exe. It is for *Itanium x64 systems*. If your system is x64, download PatchRegCleanup-x64.exe. Once the download completes close ALL open programs and browsers. Now run PatchRegCleanup-xXX.exe by *right* clicking it and choosing 'Run as administrator'. Follow the UAC prompts to allow it to run Elevated. Reboot when it's done. Download and *save* KB953297: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...0-6cf227f3968f Once the download completes close ALL open programs and browsers. Do the *right* click of NDP1.1sp1-KB953297-X86.exe to run it Elevated. Did that get the "beast" installed ? <w> If yes, then restart now and see if the other updates actually download to the system. Methinks they never did. If they do not appear, suggest you download them manually from the MS Download Center and save them: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/default.aspx EX: Enter KB973593 in the 'Search All Download Center' field and then click the magnifying glass icon to start the search. After they are all download install them one at a time, using the *right* click 'Run as admin' method to run them Elevated, restarting if prompted to, before installing the next one. |

| Re: Microsoft updates not installing
Please answer this question: Were any error codes generated when the .NET update failed to install ? Open Windows Update in Control Panel. Click the 'View update history' link. Locate the listing for Microsoft.NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 Security Update for Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 R2(KB953297) Under Status it should be showing as Failed. Now *right* click on it and choose 'View details' A window will open. What is the error code listed next to Error details ? IF the update is *not* listed and since the Patch Registration Cleanup Tool can not find the product code of .NET Framework 1.1, suggest you check to see if it can be Repaired from Program and Features (PaF)in Control Panel. After PaF is open, click on Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 IF Uninstall/Change is available on the Menu bar just above the listing of installed programs, then click that. There *should* be a Repair option available. Choose the Repair option. Restart the system if prompted to. Then manually download and *save* KB953297: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...0-6cf227f3968f Once the download completes close ALL open programs and browsers. *Right* click NDP1.1sp1-KB953297-X86.exe and choose 'Run as administrator'. Follow the UAC prompts to allow it to run Elevated. If Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 is NOT listed or the Repair option is NOT available, then .NET 1.1 can not be repaired. If that's the case then you'll need to uninstall it, run the .NET cleanup tool to ensure all remnants of it are gone ( or, if it will *not* Uninstall from PaF ), reinstall .NET Framework 1.1, and then apply .NET Framework SP1 NOTE: **Reboot between all of the steps**, please - NET Framework Cleanup Tool User's Guide http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/pages/8904493.aspx Microsoft .NET Framework Version 1.1 Redistributable Package http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...7-034d1e7cf3a3 Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...b-a83353618b38 Then install the manually dowloaded KB953297. |

| Re: Microsoft updates not installing
I have a solution for this and it works for everyone. Just do exactly what I say and it will solve all your problems. Nothing else is needed. 1. Download NDP1.1sp1-KB867460-X86.exe from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...0-6cf227f3968f to your root directory 'C:/' (you can download it anywhere but then you have to move it to your root directory so that you don't have to bother changing the path names etc). 2. Click your Windows 'START' button, and then click the 'RUN' command there. Type "cmd" (no quote marks!) in the dialog line there (called 'Open:') and then click the 'OK' button. 3. Your dark DOS window will now open. There, after the command sign '>' type "CD \" (no quote marks!) and then press ENTER. 4. This will take you to your root directory and there you will see your command prompt 'C:\>'. 5. Type the following at the command prompt 'C:>' "NDP1.1sp1-KB867460-X86.exe /t:c:\ /c" (no quote marks!) and then press ENTER. [alternatively you can copy paste the line to the DOS screen using your mouse, NO shortcut Cntl+V, it will not work on DOS screen] 6. This will extract the missing 'S867460.msp' file to your root directory. That is all you need indeed! 7. Then run your NDP1.1sp1-KB867460-X86.exe file in the root directory. 8. When the installation procedure asks you for the missing 'S867460.msp' file just click the 'Browse' button and locate the 'S867460.msp' file you have just extracted to your root directory and then click 'OK'. 9. Installation will continue and your update will be complete. That is ALL. (PS: The problem is that we have a habit of deleting the 'tmp' files and folders and this is not good for microsoft, so you have to keep all your installation 'tmp's intact or alternatively save them to a safe place so you can recover any files needed for further setups later). Here is where I found this solution: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885916 |

So, how do we know which "tmp" files are OKto delete, and which ones should be retained? |
