Code 8024402F Windows update encountered an unknown error

i am getting this error on a Windows 2008 Enterprise Service pack 1 server
which we got from Dell. Its a Dell PER710

It appears to be a Protocol Talker error.

The XML extracted from the wuredir.cab failed to load into the DOM

Either try another attempt at updating and then post the last 50 or so
lines of the WindowsUpdate.log (WUA) or install the latest release of
the Windows Update Agent:

You'll need to stop the Windows Update service and BITS, if it's a
started service, prior to installing the WUA.
Restart afterwards and see if the system can update.
