| KB968389 for Vista?
I have this computer's windows update to notify me but not to download. The updates include "Windoes Update for Vista (KB968389) Important from 8/11. when I click View Details and more information, it goes to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/968389. At the very top it has an exclamation mark in a circle and says: "! This article applies to a different version of Windows than the one you are using. Content in this article may not be relevant to you." Ya Think?? I have Windows Vista Home Basic SP1, IE8. Why is this appearing in the WU if it doesn't apply to Vista? And yes its from 8/11 and I haven't applied it because this support page also says to mess with registry keys to enable this "Extended Protection". This is a business computer (yup with home basic, lol) and I am not going to mess with registry keys. Thanks Jud |

As I see it -you have two choices. 1) Download the patch for your operating system and install it. 2) Right-click, hide, move on. According the the article, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/968389, and the information you provided about your OS (the corrected or original information - either work for this); you would download from the following link: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...c-de2a1497dcfd I would call the notification you are seeing a mistake. After all - look at the link i just gave you for downloading/installing the given patch manually. It says, "Supported Operating Systems: Windows Vista; Windows Vista Service Pack 1; Windows Vista Service Pack 2" --> you qualify/should likely install it. In the end - it's up to you though. -- Shenan Stanley MS-MVP -- How To Ask Questions The Smart Way http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html |

Be happy it didn't detect it as a Mac. <g> From the Security Advisory page: " The update itself does not directly provide protection against specific attacks such as credential forwarding, but allows applications to opt-in to Extended Protection for Authentication. This advisory briefs developers and system administrators on this new functionality and how it can be deployed to help protect authentication credentials. " If your *not* a developer or a sys admin, I see no harm in hiding the update and forgetting about it. It's strictly for developers and sys admins. It should never have been pushed out via automatic updating to millions of Typical Home Users who have no inclination to edit the registry so that the update's protection is enabled. Thank you for your reply. Sorry to take so long replying back but the "Notify" didn't "Notify" me. :) "Shenan Stanley" wrote: > Jud wrote: > > I have this computer's windows update to notify me but not to download. > > The > > updates include "Windoes Update for Vista (KB968389) Important from 8/11. > > when I click View Details and more information, it goes to > > http://support.microsoft.com/kb/968389. I think I more or less agree it being a mistake. Looking at your link I see it does say for my OS-- but -- if the click that KB968389 in the download section, it goes to that article with the ! reference again. > > In the end - it's up to you though. I think I'll hide it. Especially after reading Mow Green's reply below. Thanks so much. Jud |

Thanks for your reply. "MowGreen" wrote: > Jud stated: > > > This is a business computer > > Is it on a network at work or is it a business computer used at home? It is networked but a stand alone work station at work. I am the IT for my own computer. I had a feeling something just wasn't quite right. I am not a sys admin or a developer.....really. lol. Like Shenan Stanley said above, a "mistake". I like that. MS? Noooo. I will hide it.
