Is Office 2003 SP3 already installed? cf. Description of the update for Office 2003: December 9, 2008: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949074 Has KB949074 been installed? Have you tried inserting your Office 2003 CD into the appropriate drive bay prior to installing the updates? When all else fails, see the "How to obtain help" section of, e.g., http://support.microsoft.com/kb/972580 -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Client - since 2002 Bill wrote: > Today's updates installed OK on my desktop, but 5 failed to install > (numerous times) on my Compaq laptop. > > The updates are: > Office 2003: KB972580, KB974554, KB973705, KB974771 > Works 8: KB973636 > > The error code is 646, which seems to be a catchall. > > Office is SP3 > Works is 8.5 > > Vista HP 6.2 > > Never had any problems with updates before. |

Bill, The first thing to try would be to put the Office 2003 installation CD into your CD drive and then try the installs again. Harry. | Re: Failed updates
Each of these updates refer to Outlook 2003 which is NOT installed on the laptop, but is on the desktop. I fancy there is a problem with the MS update selection process as I have found a posting in the windows.public.live.mail.desktop "Outlook Windows Updates" from Phil reporting a similar prompt to update although Outlook is not installed on his PC. Thanks for all your assistamce. | Re: Failed updates
Known, "will not fix" bug. Updates for OL 2003 will be offered as long as Office 2003 is installed on the computer, whether or not OL itself is installed. If OL is not installed and you're offered OL updates (security or otherwise), just "hide" them and be done with it. PS: No, hiding this month's OL Junk Mail Filter Update will not hide future ones. You've gotta hide each one as it comes down the pike. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Client - since 2002 www.banthecheck.com Bill wrote: > Each of these updates refer to Outlook 2003 which is NOT installed on the > laptop, but is on the desktop. > > I fancy there is a problem with the MS update selection process as I have > found a posting in the windows.public.live.mail.desktop "Outlook Windows > Updates" from Phil reporting a similar prompt to update although Outlook > is > not installed on his PC. > > Thanks for all your assistamce. > > Bill > > > > "Bill" <willy@home.com> wrote in message > news:uhkRBMJTKHA.4028@TK2MSFTNGP05.phx.gbl... >> Today's updates installed OK on my desktop, but 5 failed to install >> (numerous times) on my Compaq laptop. >> >> The updates are: >> Office 2003: KB972580, KB974554, KB973705, KB974771 >> Works 8: KB973636 >> >> The error code is 646, which seems to be a catchall. >> >> Office is SP3 >> Works is 8.5 >> >> Vista HP 6.2 >> >> Never had any problems with updates before. >> >> Ideas please >> >> Bill |

| Re: Failed updates
Update Eventually I decided to remove my Office 2003 completely from my laptop and reinstall it from scratch including Outlook although I don't require it. Following that, WU reports I need SP3 and a couple of other fixes, and guess what. Error Code 646! So, I guess the laptop is completely vulnerable. Its really time someone from MS stood up and told us what is going on and how they intend fixing this embarrassment. The MVP's and others who are trying their best to help are being left out to dry by MS. Vista HP 32 bit fully patched (Maybe). Office 2003 Professional (not patched) Compaq 6500 series. Bill (Windows user since 3.0) Hoping someone can rattle the cage.
