Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB936181) failed

    hello,

I am having trouble with "Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services
4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB936181)" to update. It keeps failing to install and I
just don't know what to do to fix the problem. I used google to find some
help and tried some things but nothing fixed it.

Go to Start > Run > copy and paste the below into the Open: line

    %windir%\msxml4-KB936181-enu.LOG

    Click OK or press Enter.
Post the contents of the msxml4-KB936181-enu.LOG into your reply, please.

Did you check the known issues section?
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936181

Just post what you can, from the bottom of the log up. It appears that
'it's' tried to repeatedly install and that's why the log is so big.

Don't know if this will help, but I kept installing this update and it
said it updated successfully, but the update available kept showing up. I
went into add/remove programs & deleted the program & re-installed. It worked
    for me then.

If that doesn't help to resolve the issue, open the log once more and
    click Edit, Find
Enter error in the 'Find what:' field and then click the Find next
    button.
Post the section [s] that contain any errors.

See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936181 and the Known Issues section there:

You'll have to copy and paste the (1) and (2) command lines one after another
*without* the "(1)" and "(2)" into "Run" in the Start menu and hit [Enter] or
    click on "OK" each time.

Afterwards you may whish to simply install the manual downloaded KB936181
which reinstalls MSXML4 *including* the security update then.

    (1) works but when i do
    (2) Del %windir%\system32\msxml4.dll
i get an error message "Del" couldn't find "Del"????

you may want to delete the msmxml4.dll in the \Windows\System32
folder using Windows Explorer or type the above command in a "DOS" box
(Start -> Run -> cmd [Hit [Enter] key or click on OK afterwards).

there is no folder msmxml4.dll in the system32 folder.

True, but the msxml4.dll (note the correction of the name) *file*.

there is no file name msmxml4.dll in the system32 folder. the folder has
    them in alphabetical order.

    And no msxml4.dll either?

i found the msxml4.dll in the system32 folder but it wont delete becasue of
write protected locked or in use?? i appreciate all the help Freudi. sorry if
    i'm being a pain.

    And you've executed
    MsiExec.exe /uninstall {37477865-A3F1-4772-AD43-AAFC6BCFF99F} /passive
    previously?

  11. #11
    John Guest
yes i tried that but the 2nd step failed

And the /uninstall has been successful? Looking at the phenomen I doubt that.
Copy&Paste the command line above and execute it (again) under "Run" in the
Start menu. You may wish to stop *all* programs running in the background
    before doing so.

I was having the same problem and did as you said in this post. IT WORKED!!!

I am having the same issue with my system.

I have ran the auto installer no less than 40 times today and it
continues to try to install the update over and over again....I am
getting sick of the little yellow shield popping up in my bar 30
    seconds after I install.

I have tried restarting my machine and that doesn't work either.

I did, however, find a work around to at least get the shield from
popping up all the time...select custom from the menu, uncheck the
update, when the window tries to close it will ask you if you want to
stop asking for that particular item to be installed....check the box.

It still doesn't fix the install issue but it will let you get rid of
the annoyance until Microsoft gets off their butts and fixes it.

Of course you did read the known issues regarding this update !

John's solution works just fine. Simply deleting the program from control
panels install/ uninstall programs and then installing the download stopped
the craziness of seeing this stupid file to update. I do not believe this
file was tested enough before being sent out. Whether this update shows back
up in a week or two...well we'll just have to wait and see.

    Thank you John...

I am having the same issue. its quite annoying,.

i tried attaching my log file but it exceeds the max characters...
is there anything i should be looking for?

I contacted Microsoft on this issure and
he had me to download the Mcirosoft Windows Installer Cleanup utility. I
then had to find the MSXML software in the programs menu. He gave a very
detailed and easy explanation and worked like a charm for me. 12/30/07

Care to share the explanation/instructions with us?

I have had the same problem and John's solution worked great, so simple. i
    would recomend trying this first.

I too was having this program installing a gazillion times and
didn't know what to do. I simply removed it and re-installed it and so far
so good. Many many thanks. This was driving me crazy!
