Apologies if this has been raised and answered before but I have Google'd it
and there does not appear to be a definitive answer.
After installing Service Pack on Windows Vista Home Premium and after the
machine reboots I get the following 'stuck' message:
!! 0xc01a001d !! 28459/93831 (\Registry\Machine\COMPONENTS\DerivedData...)
and it never changes.
Have had to use 'System Restore' to get back to a working machine (pre
Service Pack).
How can I get the Service Pack installed?
Are you referring to Service Pack 1 ( SP1 ) ?
If yes, next question : Were you offered SP1 from Windows Update Center ?
If no, it means you machine is missing something and therefore not ready to
install SP1. In that case, don't bother to go to MS site looking for it.
That's all I know.

Windows Vista, but only for Service Pack 2 (SP2). This support for Windows
Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) is valid until November 26, 2009. Availability of

Generally, these errors can occur if the system files are corrupted.
To make clear the current situation, I recommend downloading Windows Vista

follow the steps below.
Note: This SP2 installation can be affected by certain third party programs
running in the background. If you are running any third party applications
such as Spyblocker, Internet or web accelerators (programs designed to boost
the speed of the Internet connection), security or anti-virus programs
(McAfee, Norton, etc.), I recommend we temporarily disable or shut them down
during our troubleshooting process. Please be sure to enable them again when
the update process has been completed.

Thank you for your answer PA Bear. It would have helped you had I got my
Service Pack numbers right. I got myself a bit confused between Vista and XP
SP numbers obviously.
To clarify, the machine has Vista Home Premium without Service Pack. I have
been trying to get SP1 installed and get the error message.
Am I right in assuming your answer holds for both SP1 and SP2 installs?

for SP2 now but try it anyway since SP1 is a requirement for installing SP2.

Running Vista Ultimate and have new updates to install SP1 here. I already
d/loaded SP1 / SP 2 manually so am asking this; which is better to do; let
the update automatically install or do it like above?
