    Can't install updates - error code 80070002

I'm hoping someone will be able to help.

For a few weeks I haven't been able to install any updates. I now have 18
waiting to be installed and everytime I try I get the error code 80070002.

My laptop has Vista installed although I'm not sure if it is SP1 or SP2 (how
can I tell?). I've been searching online for a solution but nothing seems to
    work.

I've tried stopping and restarting the automatic update tool as some people
have suggested but this doesn't work and also paid for a programme called
'Regcure' as was led to believe it would solve anything but that also didn't
    work.

I have no idea what to do so any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Same problem here. I sent in a help request to microsoft and got back a fix
    that didn't work either.
Seems be happened after Vista SP2 update and most of the messages relate to
    Windows Installer not working.
Now Windows update has reverted to just windows and I can't get it to the
'other products' as the microsoft update website doesn't work and comes up
    with the same error number.

Regcure is 'snake oil'. I'm sorry you were taken in by their sleazy
sales tactics and suggest you demand an immediate refund or tell them
that you will be filing a complaint with the EU. Even if that's not a
viable threat, maybe the sleaze artists at 'regcure' will take some
notice since the EU appears to have it in for US companies.

To resolve the 80070002 error, clean boot Vista:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Do Step 1. Ensure the native Vista firewall is enabled if a 3rd party
    firewall was disabled.
Next, open Internet Explorer by *right* clicking it's shortcut and
choosing 'Run as administrator'. Follow the prompts.
Once IE is running in the Elevated Mode, go here:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058

Now click the Fixit button. That will run the Fixit in it's Default
mode. If that does not resolve the error, suggest you download the
    Fixit, ResetWindows.msi, and *save* it.
Close Internet Explorer and any other open programs, then *right* click
    ResetWindows.msi and choose Install.
Restart afterwards and see if the error is now resolved.

Thanks MowGreen for taking the time to respond and now, having paid for
Regcure, I realise it's useless and will definitely be asking for a refund
(apparently they have a 60-day money back guarantee but I'm not sure if it'll
be as easy as they make out).

Unfortunately I tried your suggestions but it didn't work so the problem
    still exists.

Re: Can't install updates - error code 80070002

    1) Is the error code the same ?
    2) Did you run the Fixit on the web page; if so, what mode [Default or
Aggressive]; did you download ResetWindows.msi and run it manually ?

    3) Was the system in a Clean boot state if ResetWindows.msi was run
    manually ?

    4) What is the installed antivirus/security suite ?
    5) When was the last time the system was scanned for the presence of
'unwanted visitors' by the above ?

Thanks again for taking the time to reply. It turns out the problem was my
anti-virus programme (McAfee) blocking the windows update. It has now been
resolved and I've installed the updates.

    Thanks again for your time!

The reason I inquired as to whether
the system was clean booted is that doing a clean boot should eliminate
3rd party software as the culprit for updating issues.
Which, it turns out, was the case after all.

I have the same problem of ilana-banana and now I have 21 updates waiting to
    be installed...
I tried all the steps you suggested, but I had no luck - same error message.
    Any suggestions?

Re: Can't install updates - error code 80070002

    Please answer these questions:

    1) You clean booted Vista and the updates would not install ?

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

    2) You opened IE in the Elevated Mode, ran the Fixit in it's Default
mode, then downloaded ResetWindows.msi, closed IE, and Installed it ?

    3) What is the installed antivirus/security suite ?

    4) What Service Packs have been applied so far ?
( Click Start > Run > type in
    winver
Click OK or press Enter )
