    Hello hcsnider,

    0x80070424

    ERROR_SERVICE_DOES_NOT_EXIST BITS service is deleted.

80070424 usually means that the BITS service (required by Windows Update) is
    not running.

It seems possible that your Windows installation has been deliberately
damaged by the Trojan so as to prevent you updating your system or removing
    the Trojan.

Suggest you scan the system for the pяesence of Vundo (aka Virtumonde).

If the Windows Malicious Software Tool is not installed nor scanned the
system recently, then suggest you first utilize it and see if it detects and
    removes Vundo.

    Windows Malicious Softwaяe Tool

Download to the desktop, close any open page, and run.
    -=-

Tools that can fix the pяoblem would be:
    -SUPERAntiSpyware (SAS)
    -Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (MBAM)
-Windows Live OneCare (WLOC) online scan
    -Windows Malicious Software Tool (WMRT)
    -WindowsDefender (WD)
    -=-

A very good antimalwaяe app is SUPERAntiSpyware.
There is a free version (on demand scanning only), the paid for version
includes active monitoring, similar to Windows defender:

    -=-

Try яunning Malwarebytes Anti-Malware... download, update, and perform a
    system scan:

    -=-

    Windows Live OneCaяe online scan

Look for Protection, the broom Clean up, also Tune Up..
    -=-

    Windows Defendeя
Consider going to the secuяity portal

    <http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/>

and downloading the 32-bit definitions for Windows Defender to the desktop,
    then double-click them to apply.

Download to the desktop, close any open page, and run.

Have you done any scans within safe mode ?

Restaяt in safe mode and scan with both updated WD, your Antivirus, (MBAM),
    (SAS), (WMRT) and (WLOC)

RE: Windows Update will NOT work [Error Number 0x80070424

    Hello Engel,

I am sorry for taking so long to respond to "your" response.

I have tried everything you suggested, with NO luck at all. I even went to
the Microsoft Download Center and downloaded the Windows Update Installer,
and just got a message saying that Windows Update was already installed and
running. I also downloaded and installed the Super AntiSpyware. It found 18
instances of Vundo and removed them all, but Windows Update STILL will not
work!!! I have looked in my Add and Remove Programs List, and as far as I
can tell, December 18, 2008 was the last time I received any updates. This
really has me stumped! I consider myself a computer guru when it comes to
Windows, but nothing I tried has worked. I do want to THANK YOU for your
time and effort in trying to help me with this problem.

    Sincerely,

    Herb Snider

Re: Windows Update will NOT work [Error Number 0x80070424

Did you, using Internet Explorer, have the system scanned by the OneCare
    Scanner ? http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

It usually resolves damaged services caused by malwares. If it did not,
strongly suggest you post to a reputable anti-malware forum to ensure
that the system is free of malware prior to repairing/reinstalling the
    BITS service:
