Thread: Error Code: 0x80070643

    Error Code 0x80070643

I am having trouble with Office 2003 updates failing. There is one other
report of a similar problem in August 2005 but no response or corrective
action is provided. The failure gives the cryptic error code 0x080070643.
The error code has shown up for a Windows Defender problem... But, the
solution provided there offers to remove unspecified software from the
    computer... Not a safe approach.

I merely uninstalled my Excel 2003 viewer, reinstalled it and then the
updates worked. The free Excel 2003 viewer download can be found on a Google
    search.

    Hello:
After running windows update, there seem to be several updates necessary
for my MS Office 2003. Unfortunately, EVERY time I try to install them, it is
"unable" to. I have tried disabling my Firewall and Antivirus, too. Can you
help with some solution to this? I have posted the updates that, evidently, I
    need. Thanks!

Have you used a Reg Clean utility recently.

Anyway try the below fix for the Office 2003 Updates and post back with result

    1st Rename Office subkeys

Note: Removing the following registry keys may reset customized user
settings for your Microsoft Office programs.

    1. Close all the applications.
    2. Click on Start->Run, type in REGEDIT and click on OK.
    3. Locate and select the following registry subkeys:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0

    4. Right click on 11.0 and rename them to Old11.
    5. Close the Registry Editor.

2nd. Detect and Repair Office 2003

    1. On the Windows taskbar, click Start, point to and click Control Panel.
    2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
    3. Click Change/Remove Programs on the left pane.
    4. Highlight Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 on the right pane
    and click Change.
    5. Insert the correct version of CD when it requires.
    6. Select "Reinstall and Repair" and click Next.
    7. Select "Detect and Repair errors in my Office installation".
    8. Click Install and wait the process to end.

    RE: Error Code: 0x80070643

Should I use a reg cleaner to clear this? Or are you saying this might have
    caused the issue?

When do you think is a good time to delete OLD11.0?

Should 10.0, 9.0, 8.0 be deleted as well?

And yes, you are the man. You made me a happy camper today.

Have downloaded via Auto Update and manually updates:

Update for Outlook Junk Email Filter 2003 (KB942571)

    success. Any other suggestions?

Have you used a registry cleaner lately?

Registry cleaners have been known to cause this error in Office updates that
is why I asked. As you haven't used one suggest you start here:

I followed the instructions you sent and it works!!!!! The only situation
that was different from what was listed was I did not need to load the
installation cd but I did need to enter the product key.

I did not know that if you used the registry cleaner that it could affect
your ability to install windows updates. I will be contacting McAfee to let
them know about this problem. In the mean time thank you for your help.

The thanks actually goes to Peter Foldes. He has assisted many who have had problems with
Office updates after using a registry cleaner.

Well then WAY TO GO Peter Foldes! THANK YOU! :D

    TaurArian,
I am having the same problem as descripted. The information that you posted
is very helpful. You did mention this solution will reset "customized user
settings". Can you outline what those might be as I don't want to lose
    archived emails. Thanks!

I am having update problems with Office 2003 since July 2007 and a number of
updates have now accumulated. I have been using WinUtilities Registry
Cleaner and form what I read is that a registry cleaner could have caused the
problem. I do not have any of the original CDs and I am not very computer
savy. Can anyone provide some "user friendly" assistance to help me resolve
    the problem.

Are you able to get a log or error report? if so please post it so that i can
know where to start to help you out.

    Office 2003 Service Pack 3 (SP3)
Update for Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB955434)

i cant get both of these updates to download and they say 0 kb in size.
