Security Update for SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 4 (KB960082) Fail

This update downloaded with my automatic updates but continues to fail to
install. I had a similar problem with the previous service pack 3 update to
SQL Server 2000 which took over eight hours on the phone with MS tech support
(which they originally wanted me to pay for but I told them this was an
automatic update, not something I had downloaded or a 3rd party install). I
really do not want to go the same route as last time talking with several
tech support people on opposite ends of the planet. I need to know why this
update refuses to install. I have rebooted and rebooted and installed a few
times and it doesn't help the install. Please help!

How to troubleshoot Windows Update, Microsoft Update, and Windows Server
    Update Services installation issues:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906602

    1. See the "Need more help? Tell us what problem you are having" section of
    http://support.microsoft.com/ph/6527

    2. You cannot install some updates or programs
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798

    3a. Check your WindowsUpdate.log (%windir%\WindowsUpdate.log) for errors
    associated with the download/install.

i also have an error while installing this update on Windws Server 2003 R2.
The error is 0x642. I have tried to install this several times, have
rebooted and tried again, shutdown and waited started server PC up, still no
joy. The server is a domain controller with active directory running.
Looked at MS09-004 which had Known issues with this security update section.
On referenced article # 967092 but that again got me no joy. Followed
instructions on serveral hints but still no joy.

    <cmd_output OS="XPsp3">
    E:\>set /a c = 0x642
    1602
    E:\>net helpmsg %c%

    User cancelled installation.
    </cmd_output>

I suspect you found the wrong code. <eg>

You, too, could open a free support incident.

Any group policy also may affect your installation. Check for the group
policy Or IE tools - internet option & check for "Security tab thn check
security level. try by reducing it to med or low.

I am having the same concern also. Is there a fix for this yet?

    Try this below

Not sure of your configuration, etc., but I had the same issue and the way I
resolved it was to go into services and change the MSSQL$SBSMONITORING from
disabled to manual and this allowed the update to be installed. Then again,
it might have just been a fluke, but that's all I did and the update
installed after the change. I hope it works for you.

    change MSSQL$SBSMONITORING to manual.

How do I get in to Services?

Setting MSSQL$SBSMONITORING from Disabled to Manual also solved my problem. So this is probably not a fluke.
Sounds like a very repeatable issue and solution.

Same problem, but running XP Media Center Edition. I don't see MSSQL$SBSMONITORING in the Services box.... Some other MSSQL* services but not an obvious alternative to MSSQL$SBSMONITORING...

    Any suggestions?
