Windows Update goes to Google English instead

Somehow my IE7 got uninstalled and I'm back to IE6. When I try to reinstall
IE7 it says I can't. I also try to go to Windows Update but instead it goes
to Google with 'ENGLISH' in gray under it. I also can't download thigs from
other Microsoft pages and some of them say page not found with the Google
logo over them. How can I fix this?

Sounds like you are either infested with malware of some sort OR you
restored your computer to an earlier (perhaps even 'as purchased') date and
are infested. Although - there is a common theme. *grin*

A bad hosts file could do what you are describing (Google for how to use the
    hosts file)...
And there are several DNS trojans/malwares out there that do this type of
    thing.

Although - I do not understand how this has to do with Windows Update at
    all, here are my suggestions:

First - please give more information:
    - What operating system do you have? (Specific - Windows XP what? Home,
Professional, Media Center, Tablet PC, etc... Service Pack 1, 1a, 2 or 3?)
    - What did you do/notice right before you had the problem? Did you install
anything in particular? Did you answer any unusual questions? Someone else
    use your computer?
    - What AntiVirus application do you use?
    - What AntiSpyware applications have you used?

    Then try this:
Download, install, run, update and perform a full scan (separately) with the
following two applications (freeware versions are the ones to use for this):

    SuperAntiSpyware

    MalwareBytes

After performing a full scan with one and then the other and removing
whatever they both find completely, you may uninstall these products,
    if you wish.

    Reboot.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
    %SystemRoot%\system32\net stop wuauserv
    --> Click OK.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
    %SystemRoot%\system32\regsvr32 %SystemRoot%\system32\wups2.dll
    --> Click OK.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
    %SystemRoot%\system32\net start wuauserv
    --> Click OK.

Download the latest version of the Windows Update agent from here (x86):
    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91237
.... and save it to the root of your C:\ drive. After saving it to the root
of the C:\ drive, do the following:

Close all Internet Explorer windows and other applications.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
    %SystemDrive%\windowsupdateagent30-x86.exe /WUFORCE
    --> Click OK.

(If asked, select "Run.) --> Click on NEXT --> Select "I agree" and click on
NEXT --> When it finishes installing, click on "Finish"...

    Reboot.

Log on as a user with administrative rights and open Internet Explorer and
visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and select to do a CUSTOM scan...
(Every time you are about to click on something while at these web pages -
first press and hold down the CTRL key while you click on it. You can
release the CTRL key after clicking each time.)

Once the scan is done, select just ONE of the high priority updates
(deselect any others) and install it.

    Reboot again.

If it did work - try the web page again - selecting no more than 3-5 at a
    time.

The Optional Software updates are generally safe - although I recommend
against the "Windows Search" one. I would completely avoid the Optional
    Hardware updates.

Come back - let us know if that worked.
.... Really - come back and let everyone know if that worked.

I have Windows XP Home Edition SP3. I have tried other maleware/spyware
finder programs including Windows Live One Care. Nothing has worked and it
seems it's only the stuff going to the Microsoft page is screwed up. All of
my other Programs seem to work ok. I would just like to find how to get
whatever this is of my PC and get back to normal running mode.

I have tryied a few programs like this and they don't work. I can't call
Microsoft support because it costs $60. Money I don't have. And I guess I'm
stuck in my ways because I won't call other places because I'm wary of them.
    Sorry :(

Have you download/run the Malicious Software Removal Tool or not?

Have you run Windows Live Safety Center's Protection (online) scan or now?

[I would try any other programs but the 2 above.]

Have you posted to a forum for assistance or now?

Re: Windows Update goes to Google English instead

I gave specific instructions for a reason - did you attempt to follow them?

I know you only answered one of the questions I asked, partially answering
one of the others. You need to be very specific and detailed with your
answers - as you are the only one that can see your computer and know what
you have ried *unless* you tell a very good narrative. If you are unwilling
to attempt the things you get here - then you might as well take it to
someone who will probably try the advice given here, fix your issues and
charge you for doing so. ;-)

SuperAntiSpyware and MalwareBytes will find and remove things (at this
moment in time) that can cause the exact symptoms you are seeing - where
some 'other malware/spyware finder programs (including Windows Live One
    Care)' may not.

Please try the suggestions - you asked for assistance, that is why you came
here, correct? ;-) If you already knew how to fix it - you wouldn't have
    come here and asked.

I'm sorry. I jump the gun sometimes with things. I am in panic mode after
all...Windows 95 flashbacks. I have tried the Live OneCare for Windows. It
found everything it could. I tried going to the malware program pages in
Netscape and IE6. IE 6 says page not found and Netscape says Server not found
for both products. I also must admit to being affraid of screwing with
command lines like that. I also tried going to ZDNet but no go. I am
downloading SuperAntiSpyware Professional v4.24.1004 right now.

Had the same problem. Even could not access anti spyware websites to get help. The AVG as well as Spybot I had installed had also stopped updating.

I'm using a wireless connection - Went to Network connections > right clicked on my wireless connection > Select properties >within the new window > Select internet protocol TCP/IP> Click on Properties tab. Check if you have IP address(s) in the prefered/alternate DNS server addresses. If you do - are they the same as the DNS server IP details given by your wireless router? It would normally obtain these automatically from your internet provider.

If not - suggest you change them to match. Found my DNS server setting were going to 85.255.112.102 & 85.255.112.102. If your settings are anything like these - your computor has been seriously compromised!Found the following link very helpfull in fully resolving the problem

Good luck - took me ages to find the problem

Re: Windows Update goes to Google English instead

As the previous posts indicate its caused because of a HijackWare. They have already taken all the popular spyware and malware detection and removal sites into account and wont let you go to them. So we have to try with a lesser known sitethat does the job.
Ideally you will not be able to update your virus definitions and, adware and malware sites too will not respond.
So plz download the ' trjsetup675.exe ' file ( which the ppl who wrote this
stupid hijackware program missed to include!!) ( its a trialware free of
cost but only for 15 or 30 days but we need it only once!!) and run the
microsoft online malware removal tool from
    http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx in parallel.
This is gonna take a really loong time to complete but its worth it. During
the healing process the trojan remover is straight forward, it does its work
and asks u to restart. However the microsoft tool takes a loonger time and is
still running. So wait till it finishes and then do the restart as Both the
programs running in parallel needs to complete. This will do the trick i
    suppose.

Low -level format (zero-write using the hard disk drive manufacturer's
utilities) the drive, install Windows XP with SP3 clean and while there is
*no* network physically (yes, physically) connected.

Reset *any* SOHO router involved to default settings.

Ensure the Windows XP SP3 Firewall is enabled.

Connect the machine physically to the network and check for updates by
    visiting http://windows update.microsoft.com/

Re: Windows Update goes to Google English instead

    Hello,
I am going throug the same problem with my notebook. I have windows XP Home
SP2. I have a HP Notebook. I have been having a number of problems with my
notebook recently, so i decided to reinstall windwos and i did and i then
installed some regular softwares like adobe, etc. I am currently using
Symanted Corporate version (Freeware) as my antivirus, it gives free updates
to virus-definition although not good enough but lets me know my disease,
atleast. As i said that i had JUST reinstalled my Windows, so i am currently
not using any spyware. With reference to your post i tried to solve it but
had some issues, which i am going to indicate against you steps. (find the
instance UPDATE for me respective remarks)

UPDATE : Did all this and no spyware detected, just one in each application,
not mentionable though. Plus i wasnt able to update definitions it gave an
error asking me to check if i were connected to internet or if a firewall was
blocking, disabled firewall checked my connection, everything was fine from
my side, anyways ran a test anyway.

UPDATE : When pasted above command in run box it said given specific module
    not found.

UPDATE : When pasted the above link in google chrome, it said url not found
on server. So wasnt able to download the file.

UPDATE : Wasnt able to do any of it, because of the primary reason, i.e. win
update website not opening. Although i did logged into admin using safemode
but i guess there are no network connections allowed in safe mode so could
    really browse the internet.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Windows Update goes to Google English instead

    Hello,

I am a windows XP user but I have had this problem for a couple of weeks now. I also have this problem on my home computer. I read this whole thread and like most PC users I just wanted a quick fix. My problem was just like the one mentioned here. I could not google anything properly, becuase it always redirected me and I couldn't get to the microsoft download page to get any updates.

I found and downloaded the troja remover:

'Simply Super Software - Troja Remover' (http://www.simplysup.com)'

This fixed a malicious DNS entry, and some other harmful things that I had on my PC. Now my computer runs great. No more pop-ups, no more "unknown redirects". Thanks for this post guys, it was really helpful!!

Operator is bang on. simplysup.com 's trojan remover completely fixes this problem....I have struggled for weeks trying to make windows update work on my vista machine. The trojan remover fixed it first try. I had the same problem with Windows Updates!! I did exactly what "pabhusv" said & it worked like a charm. I had tried everything I could to try to get the security updates, to no avail!! Thanks again pabhusv!!!

Wow! Thanks vav771! I have been messing with this XP machine since New Years. I killed off whatever virus that I caught, but could never get on the MS update site. It always went to the Google site, as above. I took your advice, and went to internet protocol properties, and found the same ip address that you mentioned. Clicked on obtain ip address automatically, and instant home run. Thanks again

Hope that you have my problem.
Go to control panel-right click network connections
    properties
    internet protocol
    properties
hi lite obtain ip address automaticly
If you had an ip address there, then that was your problem. There should be none. Have a good day.. :)
