Windows update fails to install KB914454 with error 0x80070643.
    What's wrong?

I also have replaced the OSE.exe file with the one from the install CD; no
    use either.
    -Jeff

same on IE 6. OSE is not disabled, Error is reoccuring. Way to much effort
    for an update.

My co worker just ran windows update and the junk mail filter piece is no
    longer there.

I tried all of the above for the same problem (OSE to manual, copy OSE from
disc). Just uninstalled and reinstalled Office, everything is fine now.
    Updated, no problem.

    RE: KB914454 error 0x80070643

Normally that happens when the OSE is disabled. Most likely yours will be
okay (to check type on 'start-run' the following: services.msc and on the
window that opens scroll down to the 'office source engine' and double click
it. On the window that appears see that the start type is 'Manual'. If it is
'disabled' then drop the list of options and chose 'manual' then click ok.
Close the dialog and re-try the update again. If the start type was 'Manual',
then the problem is possibly the payload of the update in question is zero
(nothing to download...it should say 0KB for size), in this case, do not
waste time and go directly to the download URL here
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Hope this does it for you.
    Best regards

    RE: KB914454 error 0x80070643

The start type is "manual" already.

I tried the link to download directly, result: Update failed.

    Now what?

I'm in the same condition as finkjsc. OSE is already configured as you
described, but the install fails with Error Code: 0x80070643.

Same problem here, confirmed on 2 machines (XP Pro).

changing ose to manual or stop/start no change.
Replacing OSE.exe with version from install cd, no use.

Haven't tried re-installing office yet... guess i'll wait with that option.

Same problem here after trying the suggestions in this thread. Never have
had issues installing previous junk e-mail filters so I'm not sure what's
what. I restored my system to an earlier checkpoint prior to all of today's
updates but that didn't help either. Sigh...

    Re: KB914454 error 0x80070643

I tried the detect/repair option, it fails on every MicroSoft Office 2003
    program.

    What is going on?

All the Office 2003 programs seem to work otherwise.

I refuse to reinstall office 2003 again because I have the feeling the
    reinstall will fail too.

I am having the same problem with Error 0x80070643. I have noticed that this
error is only appearing when IE 7 is installed on the computers I am
updating. Are you on Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 Preview - released on March
20th? Could the IE 7 Beta2 be causing the issue?

    Re: KB914454 error 0x80070643

I don't have IE 7. Office updated just fine last month.

I have noticed the Office setup files have been deleted-the system tool Disk
Cleanup says there are 0KB of Office setup files. Where are the setup files
located? Why doesn't the repair option ask for my original CD if they are
    missing?

I have no idea what you're posting about, but perhaps this might or might
    not be relevant -

You receive error code 0x80070643 or error code 0x643 when you use the
Windows Update or Microsoft Update Web sites to install updates

    Re: KB914454 error 0x80070643

I don't know which of the following fixed this issue for me, but this is what I did...

    1. Uninstalled all Microsoft Office products.
    2. Uninstalled the Microsoft Activation tool.
    3. Started the Office Source Engine service.
    4. Reinstalled the Silverlight Tools for Visual Studio 2008 SP1.

Originally, I was receiving this error from trying to manually install Silverlight Tools for Visual Studio 2008 SP1. I wasn't using Windows Update but I was getting the same error.

Uninstalling Microsoft Office was no big deal because I use Corel WordPerfect anyway.
