error code 80070017 during update install

Windows Vista Ultimate 64 w/SP1

fresh install on a brand new system...

I just keep getting this error.. not on everything, but pretty much on any
"update for windows Vista for x64 - based systems", including the security
updates. Windows Defender updates fine. I'm also getting similar issues
with installing just regular programs. It won't even let me install the
firmware to allow me to watch blue ray movies (yes I have a blue ray capable
player - 2 of them)...

0x80070017 - ERROR_CRC Data error (cyclic redundancy check).

Files may be corrupt or missing.

Check Disk or Chkdsk is disk error checking in VISTA. It can be used to
check for corruption and possibly repair errors and bad sectors on the hard
drive.

Run SFC /SCANNOW
System File Checker (SFC) checks that all Vista files are where they should
be and that they are uncorrupted.
