| Windows update failing, error 80004002 - Vista SP1
Hi there, Getting a little frustrated with my Microsoft support experience so far, hopefully someone here can help. Raised a case (although this has been closed saying customer service support are only able to send a standard email and not help with a technical request!) anyhoo - rant over. Basically windows update is failing to install any updates. Won't check for updates - all fails with code 800004002. Was eventually able to change the options for when update checks/installs by turning UAC off, but still no joy with getting the updates installed or working properly. This sounds like a relatively common problem yet I haven't found a solution that works yet. Problem text is below. For anyone with access the case ID is SRX1087814491ID Only other potentially relevant bit of info is when I try to register the update dlls listed, QMGR.DDL returns an error: The module "QMGR.DLL" was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found. Make sure tha "QMGR.DLL" is a valid DLL or OCX file and then try again. Anyone confirm if this is supposed to be a valid file on vista? As I say, I have tried reinstalling the update agent anyway. Here's the problem text from the case: Problem Description: For a while now, windows updates that have been downloaded are failing to install. In Vista when 'select to install updates and shutdown is selected' it goes to the normal install screen waits a while on the first one and then skip the others and shuts down - updates remin uninstalled Additional symptoms: Windows update (and windows defender update) fail to check for updates with error code 80004002 I am unable to change windows update settings from 'install automatically every day at 3am'. No matter what I change, after I press OK, acknowledge the UAC prompt, the setting remains unchanged. This has been happening for quite some time - possibly couple of months. Following some suggestions in the knowledge base and forums, I have attempted to do the: - 'stop service, register dlls, start service' - 'stop service, rename software store' - reinstall latest windows update agent. Nothing has worked so far. Hi there, thanks for the response, although I said quite clearly in in my problem text I have tried all of those solutions - along with some others found in the knowledge base - with no success. Anyone have any other suggestions, or able to debug the problem? Only other option was to pay to phone the support line. Was kinda hoping that the email tech support would be able to do what it says on the tin but apparently not. Seems like a pretty common issue. I'm guessing the reason noone's been able to come up with a solution so far is that doing a repair install or something turns out to be quicker and less pain free than actually getting hold of anyone in Microsoft support to resolve the issue. |

The closest related may be Windows 2003 Server which shows that qmgr.dll should be registerable... http://support.microsoft.com/dllhelp...136&l=55&det=1 You could use DependencyWalker to check what should really be happening with yours and optionally trace the calls involved using DW's profiler feature. Another option if you suspect your BITS service would be using the bitsadmin /util command from a cmd window. Good luck Robert Aldwinckle --- |

Phone support for issues related to security updates is free (except that in some countries you may need to pay the phone company for the call itself). Harry. |
