"access is denied" installing distributable update files

I am getting the following error when trying to install any windows update from redistributable files: "Setup Error - Access is denied", then once "ok" is clicked "Setup Error - installation did not complete"

This happens for nearly any update file, but for example - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en will give this error. Any ideas?

Thanks!!

Always state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista SP1) when
posting to this newsgroup, please.

Do you encounter the same error when updating via Automatic Updates or
Windows Update website?

Sorry, I am using windows XP SP2. Previously automatic updates have been working, and I do remember being able to install an updates from individual file previously. I can't think of what has changed to cause this.

I am wondering where this install is trying to access, so perhaps I can check if somehow a particular file/directory/registry does not have permissions? (just guessing now)

thanks

[To keep track of things, it helps immensely if you include all of previous
message(s) in your replies to the newsgroup. Thank you.]

You've not answered my question. I didn't ask if the various methods of
installing updates used to work, I asked what works or doesn't work now.

PS: Setting up Outlook Express to access Microsoft newsgroups
