Error Code 0x80070057 Failed due to previous hr=80070057

I can't seem to figure this one out for the life of me.
I have 100 updates that need to be installed.
I have started and stopped the wuauserv, I have updated to windows update client 3 I believe it is using /wuforce
I have no proxy server, and my antivirus is turned off, it is AVG.
I have tried doing the updates one at a time and they end up failing if I do it though windows update but they work if I download them and install them manually.
and I have no third party plugins or firewalls, I have tried the updates with internet explorer 6,7, and 8 now. Im' using windows xp pro with service pack 2
below is the start and stop of my log it excludes the updates if I need to include them just ask.

Did you try renaming the SoftwareDistribution folder

    Click Start, Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
    Click OK.
    Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
    Click Stop.
Stopping the service will take a moment.

    Rename the "SoftwareDistribution" folder:
    a. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%, and then click OK.
    b. Right-click the SoftwareDistribution folder, and then click Rename.
    c. Type SoftwareDistribution.old, and then press ENTER to rename this
    folder.

    Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
    Click OK.
    Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
    Click Start.
Starting the service will take a moment.

    Reboot

You'll lose the history but not important.

Download and *save* the AU Check (v78) Tool:
    http://www.codeplex.com/aureset/Rele...eleaseId=17263

Once the download completes close all open programs and browsers.
Ensure that AVG is *completely* disabled for now. That includes *all*
    services associated with it.
Next, run au_check_v78_codeplex.exe with the system connected to the
    net or network.
    Reboot afterwards.
Now see if the system can update.

If that hasn't helped also see:
You may receive an error message that contains the "0x8DDD0018" code or the
"0x80246008" code when you try to download updates from the Microsoft
Windows Update Web site or from the Microsoft Update Web site
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910337
Windows could not start the Background Intelligent Transfer service on the
local computer. For more information, review the system event log. If this
is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor and refer to
    service-specific error code 2147942487. (0x80070057)

Some third party programs can affect the Windows Update service. If you are
running any the third party applications such as Spyblocker, Internet or Web
accelerators (Programs associated to boost up the Speed of the Internet
connection), security or anti-virus programs (Norton, MacAfee, etc.),

Suggest you contact the author of AU Reset as logs have been created in
the root drive [the drive where Windows is installed to], at
    C:\aulog
    Go here: http://www.codeplex.com/site/users/view/eddie_bowers
Click the name next to 'Contact' and create a username and password.
Then contact the author. He will request logs in C:\aulog and perhaps,
be able to sort this out.

Either due to 3rd party software or just the state of the OS, something
    is definitely amiss.

RE: Error Code 0x80070057 Failed due to previous hr=80070057

I have the same issue. I installed SP3 from SP2 then didn't like that I had
to use RDP 6.1 so I uninstalled SP3 and ever since then when trying to update
I would get an wu***.dll error and my system would crash so I did a recovery
with the SP2 cd and restored all the system files and now I have 99 updates
that need to happen and they all download fine but will not install. I have
renamed SoftwareDistribution to SoftwareDistribution.old but that did not
resolve the issue. I ran 9 updates instead of 99 and those worked fine then
crash IE so I installed IE7 and it works now but still cannot get another 91
updates to install. In the WindowsUpdate.log file I have those same errors.

Error Code 0x80070057 Failed due to previous hr=80070057

I had the same problem with a freshly installed Windows XP SP2 VM. Windows update found 100 critical updates (I don't want to install SP3 yet), but I could not install those because of the above error. I tried every possible suggestion I could find on the Internet, but nothing worked. My next try was to not install all updates at once, but in blocks to find out if there was some sort of conflict, and guess what, installing the first 90 didn't work, installing the first 80 didn't work, but installing the first 50 worked, and after the reboot the remaining 50 as well, so it looks like it has to do with the number of updates installed at once, at least in my case.

    Regards,
    Gijsbert

RE: Error Code 0x80070057 Failed due to previous hr=80070057

I ran into this same issue, and after trying every solution I could find, I
tried a repair install, which didn't work, and so I just started all over.
With a new, fresh windows install, next time the updates showed up, I was
    able to install them all.

I don't know whether this has anything to do with it, but the machine was
part of a domain which runs a WSUS server. The first time I was setting it up
I accidentally told it to turn on Automatic Updates during Windows Setup. The
second time I was installing, I did what I usually do, and told it not to.
Then, once it was joined to the domain, it immediately started picking up the
    updates from the WSUS server.

I was finally able to resolve this issue. I installed about 15 updates then
rebooted. I then installed about 5 updates then rebooted then was able to
install all the rest of the 75 updates all at once. It appears that the
issue was with trying to install all the updates at once? Maybe a buffer
issue since there were about a 100 updates?

And did you bother to read any of the other replies to the original thread?

In all likelihood, the issue was fixed when you somehow installed the
current WUAgent after you'd reinstalled WinXP.

Now you need to get WinXP SP3 installed.

actually yes i did read. Now did you read my posts??? I said I had SP3 and
SP3 sucks so I uninstalled it. After doing so it screwed everything up. I
did a repair, updated WUAgent and everything and nothing fixed it. The only
fix was to do what I explained above.

Then you horked the install of SP3 as well as the uninstall of it.
