Since update installed cannot connect to Wireless Modem

Since Automatic updates occurred on my Windows XP home computer this week
(not sure what exact updates they were) I can no longer connect to my
wireless modem. I know the problem does not lie with my ISP as I can connect
through my laptop just fine. Any ideas? It is saying the network is not
assigning a network address to the computer.

Is there a 3rd party firewall being used on the problematic system ?

Go to Start > Run > copy and paste the below into the Open: line and
then click OK or press Enter

%windir%\softwaredistribution\reportingevents.log

Scroll to the bottom of the log for the most recent entries.
Copy and paste the entries from the day the updates installed into your
reply, please. Include all the entries for that day.
That way we'll be able to see which updates installed.

Re: Since update installed cannot connect to Wireless Modem

I cannot cut and paste because I have no email connectivity on the
problematic computer since it will not connect to the wireless modem. I am
currently working from my laptop. I did run the report though and I think
the one that caused the problem is:

{06FBACA3-C262-4000-85F1-1C57D6CF294D} 2008-09-15 20:39:11:140-0400 1 202
102 {00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000} 0 0 AutomaticUpdates Success
Content Install Reboot completed.

I don't believe their is a 3rd party firewall but I am no techie.

Thanks for the help!

Re: Since update installed cannot connect to Wireless Modem

We need to see the *updates* that were installed not what you posted.
Suggest you use a USB thumb drive to transfer the log entries to the
system with connectivity.

What is the installed antivirus\security suite on the affected system ?

The connectivity issue is directly related to the McAfee actively
monitoring the system when SP3 was installed.
Right after the rebooting of the system after SP3 was installed, is this:

> AutomaticUpdates Failure Software
> Synchronization Unable to Connect: Windows is unable to connect to the
> automatic updates service and therefore cannot download and install updates

Suggest you uninstall XP SP3 from within Add/Remove Programs in the
Control Panel. Restart the system and see if connectivity is restored.
If not, you can try resetting the Winsock stack . If no joy, then you
may need to do a Repair Installation of XP to get connectivity back.

To restore the Winsock, open a Command Prompt from
Start > Run > type in cmd
Click OK or press Enter.
At the prompt, type in the following *exactly* as written, and press
Enter after *each* command.

netsh winsock reset
exit

Restart the system and see if connectivity has been restored.
If it's not, see this for Repair instructions:
