Microsoft Silverlight 1.0 (KB955305) update fails with 0x5DF code

I have done a clean install and Microsoft Update installs every update but is
failing to install Microsoft Silverlight 1.0 (KB955305) and gives an error
code of 0x5DF which (I believe) is due to "the event log file has changed
    between read operations" or "ERROR_EVENTLOG_FILE_CHANGED".

Can someone please advise me how to correct this.

Unlikely. Please post the contents of KB955305.log, or if that file doesn't
exist, the last hundred lines of WindowsUpdate.log. Both these files can
    usually be found in c:\windows.

KB955305.LOG doesn't exist but I have gone into the WindowsUpdate.log and
see that the error message is in fact 0x80070643.

    Does this help ?

Not much, I'm afraid - that code translates to "Fatal error during installation."

Try downloading the update from the Microsoft Update Catalog:
    <http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Search.aspx?q=955305>

Choose "Update for Microsoft Silverlight" (either one) if you already have
Silverlight installed, or "Microsoft Silverlight" if you don't.

If installing it manually doesn't work, check again for KB955305.log (the manual
installer might create it). If that still isn't there, please post some more of
WindowsUpdate.log; the part I need to see is just before the bit you posted - a
hundred or so lines should do.

apologies for the delay in responding. I reformatted my hard disk
    and tried again. Same error.

Here is the Windows Update Log.

I need the part where the update actually tries to install.

Did you try the manual update as I suggested?

I also ran into trouble with the Silverlight install from MS Update. I'm
setting up WinXP on a P2-400 PC.

I went to the alt. location listed above and downloaded the Silverlight
install then tried to run it. It gave an error indicating that my processor
doesn't support SSE Instruction Set extensions. I looked up SSE on wikipedia
and it looks like it first introduced with the Pentium III. Bottom line,
Silverlight doesn't work on a Pentium II. That explains my problem. I don't
know if it explains the problem the original poster had.

I wish MS/Windows Update explained this.

I have the same problem to install the Microsoft
Silverlight but, I think I've found that log part about the Windows Update.
(sorry about my english, I'm from Brasil). I will paste it and hope you can
    help.

Re: Microsoft Silverlight 1.0 (KB955305) update fails with 0x5DFc

The log doesn't tell us much, I'm afraid.

First, check what sort of CPU you have. Silverlight doesn't work on a Pentium
II. If you don't know, go to the System Information tool in All Programs -
Accessories - System Tools and post the line(s) that start with "Processor".

Try downloading the update from the Microsoft Update Catalog:
    <http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Search.aspx?q=955305>

Choose "Update for Microsoft Silverlight" (either one) if you already have
Silverlight installed, or "Microsoft Silverlight" if you don't.

If this doesn't work, there should be a file in c:\windows named KB955305.log.
    Post the contents.

Thank you for answering, but the Processor I have its not Pentium II. Its:

    AMD Duron(tm) Processor
    1.30 GHz, 1,00GB de RAM

    Microsoft Windows XP Professional 2002
    5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Compilação 2600
    x86 Family 6 Model 7 Stepping 1 AuthenticAMD ~1300 Mhz

And in that site came this: "Message ID: 1503"

Sofar, today the same still happens, ran an update today (CPU is Intel Core 2
Duo, 2,66, so adequate) and update failed. (incompatibility with Windows 7).
A manual install from this community site went well.

Why bother? Silverlight 3.0 is out; replaces all previous versions.

FWIW, it's not fixed yet but I appreciate this thread and your contributions.

"Silverlight" is offered by Windows Update every time I update this Duron
machine, and of course fails every time with no clear error message. Sloppy,
    Microsoft.

"MicrosoftUpdate Failure Content Install Installation Failure: Windows
failed to install the following update
    with error 0x80070643: Microsoft Silverlight 1.0 (KB955305)."

You receive error code 0x80070643 or error code 0x643 when you use the
Windows Update or Microsoft Update Web sites to install updates
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958052

I agree with the other person that Update shoudl not have presented this
update as an option for a processor which it does not support. Update after
all spends ages extracting info about the PC it is to provide updates for.
The processor type is a pretty basic set of info.

Agreed. I'll pass this one on to Microsoft, hopefully they will fix it in a
    future version.

FYI for any others that get the same error message (and find this thread when
    searching)

Got the same error as above when trying to install only son's computer (it's
my old box).. Also tried the update catalog install give above, and got
told my cpu is not supported because it doesn't have SSE

You can use a freeware program called CPU-Z (search web for 'cpuid' to
find it) that will give you more info on your processor.

In my case it tells me that the system is a 1.4g Athlon codename
"Thunderbird" (which yes now that I see it, is the cpu that was current when
I built this box) which supports MMX and 3DNow!(+) but not SSE.

And let me add my voice to those others who've said that given the system
cannot support it, it's entirely LAME and as the kids say "full of fail" for
the update system to have even presented this update to me for this system.
I've wasted far too much time that I'll never get back trying to get this
update to install, when it turns out it's not appropriate for this system in
    the first place.

I expect better from MS.. Comparing the system requirements of an update
with the basic parameters of the system (including the cpu) is NOT rocket
    science.

Re: Microsoft Silverlight 1.0 (KB955305) update fails with 0x5DF c

I agree too! but, telling Microsoft didn't solve anything it's still
happening now in July 2010....YEARS later! So much for followup...
Windows 7 is better than Vista but still not as good or reliable as XP!
Now we are going to continue pressing ever forward without providing a
stable product; and you wonder why Microsoft is loosing the lead?
