Do you have any substituted drive letters asssigned? (If you aren't sure, open
a command window, type "subst" and press ENTER.)

Are there any removable media mounted on your machine?

I have been having the same problem. I am running Vista Ultimate on a
Thinkpad T60p. I have tried to install the Silverlight 1.0 update at least
20 times. The install always fails with an Error 64C.

Dearly beloved in this fiasco. (zulu, 30xa, terri, walt)
Hoping that you will come back to this exchange for my solution. The experts
were of no help and very burocratic
Uninstall Silverlight, preferably with the Windows Install clean up.
    Reboot.
Download the SL1 and expand into a directory in C:\temp\SL1 (I did not tried
    the 2.0 because it beta)
Using the install.exe will give you another failure. Insted use the msi file
    directly installing it.
    It worked for me.
    Cheers

One more thing, for peace of mind.
If after compleating install you attempt to install KB959305, it will tell
you that it is not needed.

Hey Ronaldo and everybody who has this problem

    I got it working :D

By the way, my system is runing XP pro SP3.

I tryed to uninstall using windows "add/remove programs", it did not work.
Then I downloaded "Windows Install clean up" and uninstalled it that way.
Silverlight is still showing in "add/remove programs" but now it gives a new
    error when trying to uninstall.

I then restartet. Silverlight is still showing in "add/remove programs" but
I proceded anyway. I then followed Ronaldo's steps (see below) installing the
    msi file like this:

    msiexec.exe /I C:\temp\SL1\silverlight.msi

It took less then a second, but guess what... It actually works, no more
    problems :D.

    Thanks alot Ronaldo!!!
