I am having the same problem with downloading the works update. When I push the download button it says it can't find the file. When I make a folder on my hd for it to open it to it still says the same thing. Download works for me, I don't know why you're having trouble downloading the file. Perhaps it's something on your computer that is causing the problem. Have you checked for viruses/malware etc recently. Download KB955428_en-US.cab to your C: drive. You will then extract the file to your C: drive. Then click on the extracted file in your C: drive and it will appear to install and then disappear. Restart your computer and download the update and it should succeed. I hope this helps you! Laurie: Yesterday, a tip from "Sterling" did the trick for me. Like you, Windows Update downloaded but could not install the Works8 update. Here is what you can do; Sterling's tip that worked for me. 1. go to www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?Family ID=458985c3-9c6f-4049-81cd-0d0389c81f11&DisplayLang=en . 2. Download the file KB955428_en-US.cab. Save this to your desktop. (Easiest way to proceed) 3. Once you have downloaded it to your desktop, double-click the icon on your desktop. A window will open with the file in it. Double-click that icon and select Extract (to Desktop). Once the extraction has completed (it is very quick and puts a new icon on your desktop), close that window and doubler-click the new icon just extracted to your desktop. 4. When you double click tthe icon the update will install. (In my case, I went back to the Windows Update for that install, after double-clicking .) It's taken me 3days to get this update. The tip from Graceful/Graceless did the trick for me. However, now that I have cleared the update I lost the msworks icon on my desktop.After the update was installed I restarted my computer. I still had the installer icon. When I clicked on this I was able to launch the programme by choosing MS Works. This changed the icon but not the installer name, which I have changed to MS WORKS. Then when I clicked on it I get a window that says:- Works unable to open the project you selected. The file may be corrupted. Once I close this window by clicking on o.k. then the programme opens normally. Can anyone tell me if the programme is corrupted or how I get rid of the window that says it maybe? -- Old Bird! Laurie: Sorry to hear that. I am fairly new at this. The solution I gave you (from another Community gy, "Sterling") did work for me. I, like you, kept getting Windows Update refusing to install. All I can suggest is that you again go through the procedure that I last gave. My first attempt I think I did something wrong, because it did not work at first. Maybe you should restart after that last "extraction" step? Then, go back to Windows Update. It seems to me that when I extracted to my desktop that I did NOT restart, but went right to Windows Update (by clicking on that persistent Diamond on my task bar down below). At any rate, I think it is worth your time to try again: go to that Microsoft download site and try to extraft and run that .cab file again. what would you do if you tried to install update for microsoft works 8 (kb955428) and it says: the feature you are trying to use is on a CD_ROM or other removable disk thatis not available. carmella, I have been having the same problem as you. I also found that this problem we've been experiencing (getting a request to insert a Microsoft Works CD and then clicking "cancel" since we do not have the CD) results in only some of the updates being installed onto our computer, but not ALL the updates. Furthermore, some of the updates that are not installed are listed as "critical" (updates KB955617, KB955048, KB954066, KB924090 specifically). So, it's probably not a good idea to ignore this issue. I have attempted to install these critical updates manually using the method outlined above by Graceful/Graceless, but I've had no luck. Again, only some of the updates are being installed, but not all - and not any of the critical updates I've listed previously. Incidentally, you can check to see if these updates have been installed onto your computer by going to Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, and then ticking the "show updates" box at the very top of the Add/Remove Programs window. You'll have to scroll down through all of the listings to find the updates as they are scattered throughout the window. The complete list of required updates can be found at http://www.microsoft.com/protect/com...ns/200808.mspx. I've sent an email to Microsoft about this problem and as soon as I get a response, I'll let you know what they've told me by posting a message here. |
