Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Powerpoint Viewer?
Perhaps try the full update

Usually the updates fail for viewer files because it can't find the source.

Hi,

just for the record, but I am experiencing exactly the same error (0x4397)
when trying to install update KB949041 from Microsoft Update; also tried it
several times.
Reinstalling PowerPoint2003 Viewer does not help.
Also applying installation of the full update
(office2003-kb949041-fullfile-x86-en-us.exe) fails with the message "The
installation of package failed".
Any suggestions?

I am experiencing the same probelm with the same error code.
I have tried to install the upadate at least 10 times.
I gone to the cotnrol panel and to add/remove programs and deleted the
failed updates and this does not solve the probelm either.

Downloaded and updated PowerPoint viewer 2007 per your recommendation and
the security update notification stopped. Now to check if any of my *.pps
files can be displayed properly (and I'm betting then can!)

Thanks a million for the heads-up, Focusteve. From all the trouble
indications associated with this most recent MS update I'd say that we can
expect a bunch of corrective updates to follow.

By installing that download it made the update unnecessary and the
notification went away. Thanks very much for the help. This Vista thing has
been a nightmare, A NIGHTMARE (!) since I bought my PC in Oct. of last year
and most problems like this have lingered for days and have taken hours to
resolve. Thanks to you this was one of the easiest.

Okay, the support from Microsoft indicated the exact same thing as the
others, download and install the 2007 viewer.

Unfortunately, this didn't fix my issue.

Although, it piqued my curiousity and I looked in the "Add or Remove
Programs" list of programs and Lo and Behold, there were both programs listed
as installed. Both the 2003 AND the 2007 viewer.

When I attempted an uninstall of the 2003 viewer this time, it failed
indicating it couldn't find the *.msi file that was associated with it.

I used the Windows Install Cleanup Utility and removed the 2003 viewer from
the list.

Problem solved. Windows update no longer requires the security update.

Thanks bofrights, this was a big help. After reading this I observed that I
had the 2003 viewer, but not the 2007. I installed the 2007 viewer with the
idea that I would then uninstall the 2003 viewer and that should make the
problem go away. However, when I installed the 2007 viewer, it took out
2003. I then ran Windows update again and got a bunch of updates for 2007
which all installed without incident. Problem solved. My laptop runs on XP.
Hope this is helpful to someone else.
