I have a laptop with XP Pro SP2 and the Windows Update service is disabled
and will not start. When I try to start it I receive error 1058. I have
already tried reinstalling Windows Update Client. I re-registered the WU
dll's. And I checked to make sure that the Profiel is enabled in the service
properties. Any other ideas???

The symptoms you describe indicate that a malware known as
Vundo\Virtumonde is resident. Using Internet Explorer, have the system
scanned here: http://onecare.live.com/site/en-au/center/howsafe.htm
Several posters in this newsgroup have reported that the malware was
successfully removed using the above scanner.
Others have used Superantispyware to remove the malware.
You can use google to find it if the OneCare scan doesn't remove it.

Both were unsuccessful. However I also get Error number 0x80070 when I
attempt to "Review update history" through Dell Support. Microsoft support
pages will not open for me. "Automatic updates" simply will not enable

Problem Description: Windows Update service is disabled and will not start.
When I try to start it I receive error 1058, the service cannot be started,
either becaue it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated
with it.
I did have a malware known as Vundo\Virtumonde, but removed it using
XoftSpySE. I also now get the following error when I start my pc:
Error loading C:\windows\system32\qkbvvbcv.dll
I have the feeling this was associated to the malware
Can you help me get my pc working correctly?

This is an incomplete code. Hex codes should have 8 nibbles.
E.g. if it was a code to represent your 1058 it might be 0x80070422

Need better symptom descriptions. Remember, your words
have to substitute for what our eyes might notice.
However, you're jumping into someone else's incident and without
specific confirmation about your details we really should not
assume anything about your other details, such as OS,
browser version, etc. Note that last month there was a jimbo
who was asking about Vista. If that was you and this latest
incident is on the same machine any suggestions you might
be given here could confuse readers who happened to have
the identical symptoms of the OP, including the same OS.

Yes, that file is malware-related. The message indicates that the system
is looking for it on boot but since it's been deleted, the error message
appears. Actually, that's a good thing and nothing to be concerned with
right now.
If the AU service is still disabled, using Internet Explorer, have the
system scanned here: http://onecare.live.com/site/en-au/center/howsafe.htm
Or, use google to locate a download link for Superantispyware. Some
posters in this newsgroup have had success removing Vund\Virtumonde with it.
If nothing you do resolves the issue, then post to a reputable

so sorry - I goofed with the empty message with "trial and error" pushing
buttons. No it was not me re:Vista. This is the first time I've tried using
this system attempting to fix my own computer, but obviously I should have
taken it to the experts....but have learned a lot trying!! Thank you for your
