Thread: Error Code: 0x643 "Windows Search 4.0 for Windows XP (KB940157)"

    Error Code: 0x643 "Windows Search 4.0 for Windows XP (KB940157)"

    After searching high and low on this msg board for the answer I felt I had to
    ask, since most of the topics here refers to .net/framework, which is not in
    this case my issue.

    On July 24th 2008:
    Tried to update "Windows Search 4.0 for Windows XP (KB940157)" from
    http://www.update.microsoft.com/ but it gives an install error of 0x643.
    The question is what the error code exactly means, is it cause that I have
    stopped some service, or cause of ... ??

    I had to deinstall all the other helper programs (search for files of type
    UNCFAT, .MSG, Favorites etc,), deinstall 3.xxx then re-install 4.0 from the
    MS download page. Then all worked.

    You have to have terminal services enabled in order to install.
    Start>run>type "msconfig" & press enter>click services tab>make sure terminal
    services box is checked, if it isn't check it>apply>restart>install. You can
    download Windows Search 4.0 here
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/pro...b=Install%20It

    THANKS, Chaos5207!
    After enabling "Terminal Services", this download/update worked perfectly
    for me!

    RE: Error Code: 0x643 "Windows Search 4.0 for Windows XP (KB94015

    I also tried the site that Chaos5207 gave and after downloading Windows 4.0
    it said it didn't apply to my system. I am totally confused now and don't
    know if i need this update or not, if not how do i get rid of the offer of
    installing it at each close down?
    Many thanks again, Mark

    <cmd_output OS="XPsp2">

    E:\>set /a c = 0x422
    1058
    E:\>net helpmsg %c%

    The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.

    </cmd_output>

    Ignore the helpmsg. You have a magic number which apparently implies
    malware (e.g. "Vundo") is on board.

    Do a search for
    1058 Vundo MVP

    Good luck

    Hi Robert and thanks for the reply,
    Where is the best place to search for that code? also can you give any more
    information about it?

    Many thanks

    Sigh. I usually give the hint for web interface users such as yourself.
    Use your search tool. E.g. press Alt-7 and enter the search terms I gave.

    > also can you give any more information about it?

    Try the above first? You could also try a web search with the same
    search terms but adding the MVP term might be more usefully replaced
    by "Windows Update" since a search in here already implies that
    and web documents are often not "signed". Otherwise you would probably
    get just extracts of news discussions such as you can find here. ; }

    Good luck

    Robert

    I was able to resolve this by firstly uninstalling the Windows Search version 3 from the control panel. After that, windows update successfully installed version four.
