    The speakers are inbuilt...

    any other ideas?

I have tried plugging them in before starting my laptop but this doesn't work as there is not even an option to chose headphones at default...

I am on windows vista by the way if that makes a difference.

    Hi,
The socket for Headphone/Ext Speakers is like a DPDT switch. It should essentially disconnect once an external jack is plugged. If it does not Please get your socket checked. Also please mention what sound card you have as in some machines you can also get around through software.

    Hope this help

I've experienced this problem a few times. The first time I fixed it by reinstalling Vista. This is a tedious and time-consuming affair you should try to avoid. I've since come to realize that the problem is probably an incorrect driver. When you reinstall Vista, the correct driver is installed; but, HP and driver update programs will tell you that it's out of date and offer you a link to a new version. My problems seem to begin when I install the update.

I haven't figured out how to find the correct driver. Maybe some of the more tech-savvy members can provide us with a link to the ORIGINAL driver.

Well you need to go in to properties of the HD audio, then go to analouge and there you need to uncheck automatic headphone detection. That will resolve your issue.

Actually, I solved it later by downloading a driver from RealTek.com.

Double click on volume icon in task bar. Go to Options. Go to Properties. Remove the check mark beside PC speakers.
