Anybody know if this can be done successfully? When inserting as an object, one gets the little pdf icon, not the image of the document. Having a 100 or more documents, converting to jpeg images would be long lots of work.

To display a pdf within a PowerPoint presentation, you'd need a pdf control. I suspect you only get one if you have Adobe Acrobat Pro - but try Googling for "pdf ocx" or the like.
Well, I think you can try in this way, you can convert PDF to PowerPoint, and then just copy and paste that conversion result to you PowerPoint, it is much more convenient than you make a link to PDF file, Right? And you can just show your audiences so easily.
And you can check this PDF to ms powerpoint converter out, it's quite well for me. I always use it to reuse some gorgeous templates in PDF files.
