cannot uninstall app in Windows 8.1, error code 0xc0000142 I am running Windows 8.1 on my computer and one of the Internet Service Provider tech support came to my house to set up the internet. He also installed an app which I am unable to uninstall. I also cannot get any information about this app for what purpose it is used but I can see it installed in the Programs under Control Panel. If I am trying to remove this app then it just gives me an error message that says "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142). Click OK to close the application". Can anyone tell me how do I remove this app? Thanks |

Re: cannot uninstall app in Windows 8.1, error code 0xc0000142 You can try taking Ownership on Windows 8.1. To do that right click on the file or folder and then go to its Properties and click on Security Tab. Now to take ownership you need to click on Advanced. After that click on Change and enter the object name. You have to type in your Windows username and click ok and then you can see that the owner has changed to your username. Now click on Replace owner on subcontainers and object and click Apply and click Yes to proceed. Click again 2 more times and then click on Advanced. Here you need to click on Add Multiple object and inherit permission you need to click on Change Permissions and click on Enable inheritance. If you want to add new object then click on Add and click on Select a Principal and type the Object name. After that you can enable the basic permission. |

Re: cannot uninstall app in Windows 8.1, error code 0xc0000142 There is also another tool called RegOwnit that can be used to take ownership of the file and folder. This software was developed by Lee Whittington for the Windows Club and even though it works fine on Windows 7, still you can use it on your Windows 8.1 operating system. But remember that it is strongly recommended that you should first backup your Windows registry key and also create a system restore point before making any changes to your system. |

Re: cannot uninstall app in Windows 8.1, error code 0xc0000142 You can even try to remove the same app using Command Prompt in your Windows 8.1. To do that open an elevated command prompt in Windows 8.1 and type wmic and press Enter. After that type the product name and press Enter. Now you wil have to type the below command using the exact name of the app that you want to uninstall and then press Enter: product where name=?name of program? call uninstall Incase you are prompted then type Y to confirm uninstalling the program and press Enter. When the app is successfully uinstalled then you can close the command prompt. |
