If you want to manage your Hotmail account using an e-mail app, have POP3 and SMTP server and port settings in the e-mail app to be set up accordingly. You need the following information:

- SMTP server: smtp.live.com (Port 25)
- Choose both POP3 as well as for SMTP connections from option SSL (Secure Sockets Layer).
- Choose SMTP connections for SMTP authentication.
- Choose the Outgoing server requires authentication from. (In most e-mail apps, this option is not enabled by default.)
- Username: Enter your full e-mail address.
- Password: Enter your Windows Live ID password.
If e-mail messages should not be permanently removed from the Inbox after viewing them in your e-mail program, Choose the option of leaving a copy of messages on the server.
Hotmail has a feature that prevents the will to go e-mail is lost, if you have unintentionally set up POP3 so the messages are removed later than reading on the server. How it works:
If Hotmail receives for the first time a POP3 command for deleting e-mail messages after they have been using an e-mail app read the messages in hotmail are not removed. Instead, move the Hotmail e-mail messages that are downloaded from the e-mail app, from the Inbox folder in a POP. The POP is available folders in the Folder List.
The e-mail messages are retained in Hotmail POP folders until you log in to your Hotmail account and decide whether the POP3 remove command is to be respected or ignored by Hotmail.
To confirm the POP3 settings:
1. Click in the upper right corner of the Hotmail window, click Options, and then click More options.
2. Click on Manage POP account and remove downloaded messages, and select from the following options:
o Prevent another program removes messages from Hotmail. (If the program is set to remove messages from the server, they can easily be moved to a particular POP folder. You will not be removed.)
o The settings of the other program apply: The messages are then removed.
3. Click on Save.
