ms project task resource setup

Hi All,
I need to set up a project to schedule tasks on machines using resources.
The machines (defined as a resource) are based on a 2-shift, 16hr calendar, 6am-10pm
People resources are either am or pm shift, 6-2 or 2-10
The project calendar is 16h, same as machines.
I have experimented with all variations of fixed duration units, effort etc, but still get silly messages such as ' the resource is assigned outside ...'. at which point the duration is modified, or the usage is messed-up.
I do not want to 'automatically' modify the duration.
All I want to do is assign multiple resources to a task; e.g. assign one machine (as a resource) and 2 people (one per shift) to complete a 16 hr task. i.e. The machine resource would work for 16 hours, and each person 8 consecutively.
Resources would work 100% of their time on one machine at a time.
Is this possible in project? If so - please advise settings.
