AutoUpdate/Ati Catalyst Broken

I was making use of the AutoUpdate for updating the Ati Catalyst and here are the thing that happens to me while doing that.
  • Installed the standard Creative drivers for my X-FI Titanium 2.17.007 and it worked
  • Installed ATI Catalyst 9.10 and it stopped working.
  • By mistake I let Windows Update install its WHQL Creative driver and AutoUpdate started working.
  • After that I used the other shortcut for AutoUpdateA.exe to get updates for Creative products in windows 7 64, and it worked every time to reinstall the Creative 2.17.007.
  • Three weeks later I installed Catalyst 9.12 drivers and immediately after reboot, AutoUpdate is broken.
  • Windows 7 Action Center reports errors with Creative AutoUpdate.
  • If I delete Creative drivers using CTZAPP, Windows Update upon reboot will install its own update to Creative's drivers. I reinstall Creative 2.17.007 and Creative AutoUpdate still works.
  • I installed ATI Catalyst and it is broken again. The Catalyst installation breaks it every time. Reinstalling Windows Update version of Creative drivers, uninstalling those and installing Creative's several times usually fixes AutoUpdate. Within a few days, Autoupdate is broken.
Anybody else have the issue with Catalyst 9.10 to 9.12 and Creative AutoUpdate?

Re: AutoUpdate/Ati Catalyst Broken

This was bugging me as well. What I did at first was let Windows Update re-install its Creative drivers and that fixed my AutoUpdate but now this fixes it just fine. That is meant to fix AutoUpdate. This worked for me beautifully after rebooting. It broke again. Why? Because I installed new Catalyst drivers. So I manually installed this fix again and it worked. I hope that this post will help you in any manner to resolve the problem. Please let me know is this does not solve the problem.

Re: AutoUpdate/Ati Catalyst Broken

You can try and uninstall the CCC (Catalyst Control Center) and not the actual video drivers. It?s the CCC (the little red "ATI" box in your task manager on the lower right) that is causing this problem. You will still have accelerated video with the drivers installed but not the special ATI utility to configure them. Use the built-in Windows 7 advanced graphics utility when you right click on the desktop (right-click and choose "Screen Resolution"). Inside that window is a link called "Advanced settings" which will let you do the same functions as the CCC does without the CCC's interference. I hope this helps.

Re: AutoUpdate/Ati Catalyst Broken

I would do as you say but not all games contain options intended for AA/Anisotropic filtering, etc that the control center does. Also, I use the AVIVO color controls on my system quite a bit actually. The Windows 7 built-in control are pretty good, but I prefer my ATI tools. I already submitted this to ATI a few days ago. There are three other similar submissions there in the last three months for the last few Catalyst releases. I filed a formal case submission and documented as much as I could. I sent screenshots before and after, driver versions and fixes. Thanks for your time in discussing this with me.

I agree with the suggestion that is given by that but if you want then you can also modify advanced settings with the built-in Windows settings and other utilities. The point of this is to see removing the CCC fixes his problem. If it does not he can always reinstall it. This is a troubleshooting step not written in stone. So you can try above given suggestion and also this one and check which resolves the problem. I wish you will be out of this soon.

Re: AutoUpdate/Ati Catalyst Broken

Wait, you uninstalled both the CCC and the drivers or just the CCC? Which one? Try installing everything then removing the CCC or just installing the drivers (and not the CCC). If my hunch is correct, it is the CCC only that is causing the problem and not the drivers. ATI drivers are known for their stability. It?s the CCC software implementation that can, on occasion under Windows 7, cause it to crash and restart itself under heavy OS load. I have seen this. But the drivers themselves are rock solid in my experience.

Re: AutoUpdate/Ati Catalyst Broken

I believe that the ability for the CCC to reboot itself after a crash is somehow related to the Graphics > Display Options > "Detect whenever Catalyst Control Center is opened" setting because putting this into manual mode does not crash it ever. So somewhere behind the scenes, this setting restarts the CCC if it does crash, so in effect, it is possible that it may be causing the crash of the CCC, if it ever rarely does. But this is just theory on my part, as I can only see what effect this rather simple setting has without any code to compare it to or a log file to compare it with.
