Please Help Excel files blank xlsx

Please help I have several files stored on a 16gb usb memory stick. I have tried to open the excel files (which I do daily) and I have the message:

Excel cannot open the file '(filename)'.xlsx' because the file format or file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file.

I have tried changing the name to .xls - this doesnt work either it says the file is in a unrecognizable format if i click ok it opens Blank!

Any help guys would be really appreciated as they are important work files and I am no computer expert.

I am still trying to open a file for work in Excel 2007. It gives me the following
error:

"Excel cannot open the file '(filename)'.xlsx' because the file
format or file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been
corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file."

I have tried opening in 2003 - the same prob, I have changed the file names to Xls - still doesnt work

I've tried the "Open and Repair" option of Excel, but to no avail. I tried
copying it with no luck. I tried
3 different computers...nothing! I have made duplicates emailed etc but nothing works.

. Can someone please help me out?

This kind of issue appears when you are sending your workbook for review and it got saved in Excel Binary format and it got automatic .xlsx extension by default. I will advise you to change the file extension to .xlsb format and then try to work with the file. Try this out and do let me know whether this is working with the issue or not.
