How to difference between 32 bit and 64 bit Exchange 2007?

I am newly joined in a company with the post of the Network Admin. My senior had not left any notes for my job. I have a query and I have decided to ask you for the solution. I want to know whether we are using 64 bit or 32 bit exchange 2007. I want to update SP2 Exchange 2007 before going for migrating to Exchange 2010. If I can differentiate between those 2 versions then only I can identify the right updates. I hope you will provide me appropriate answer to my query. Thanking you in advance.

Well as you know there are 2 versions are available for the Exchange 2007 viz. 32 bit and 64 bit. Both versions are used in different environment. If you know the difference between the environments, you can easily know the version of the Exchange 2007. In non-production environment 32 bit version is used. Usually it is used for training purpose.64 bit Exchange 2007Version is used for the production environment only. Another difference is 32 bit Exchange 2007 version is available only in Standard Edition where 64 bit Exchange 2007 is available for both Standard Edition and the Enterprise Edition.

Following step may help you to identify the correct version of the Exchange 2007. Navigate to program files\......\bin folders in your computer. If you find .exe file check the properties of the file. It will let you know the version whether 32 bit or 64 bit. If it is of 32 bit version Exchange2007 it will be installed in the C:\Program Files (x86) folder. I hope it will identify the difference between 32bit and the 64 bit version of Exchange 2007.

Another way to differentiate between the both versions by identifying the version of the Operating system you are using. I f you are using 32 bit version of the operating system you cannot run 64 bit program .It is the most simple way to identify the version of the program with respect to operating system. I think above mentioned trick will help you to solve your issue. If still you are unable to know I will suggest you another ways.

If you are not having the following features in your Exchange 2007 then definitely you are using Exchange 2007 of 32 bit version. Automatic spam updates is not available in Exchange 2007 32 bit version. You can have maximum number of 5 database per server machine also you have maximum number of 5 storage group available on the 32 bit Exchange 2007 version. I think it more precise information to identify the difference.

You can also identify the correct version by Exchange Best Practice Analyzer. It is tool which enables you to determine whether configuration is set as per the business standard or not. You should run the Health Check “Exchange Server 32-bit” will be displayed with yellowish exclamation sign. For 64 bit Version no error message will be displayed on the screen. Also it will display“64-bit operating system detected”
