If the volume shadow copies are enabled for shared folders , you can restore or recover files that have been accidentally deleted or become corrupted . Previous versions of files can be copied to the same location or another location .Through Volume Shadow Copies , you can recover files that were overwritten when you need to use a previous version of the file.

You need to configure the volume shadow copies on NTFS volumes . The shadow copy feature is actually an NTFS feature introduced with Windows Server 2003 . Shadow copies are used to create copies of files from the shadows at a particular time and on a per unit volume , which means that you have basically set up shadow copies on volume. You therefore can not specify only certain files and folders for copies of the volume shadow .

The main requirements to enable shadow copies films are :
    * The shadow must be configured on NTFS volumes , and volume basis.
    * The NTFS volume that you want to configure Volume Shadow copies should have 100 MB of free volume (minimum requirement) . The maximum is 10 % free disk space volume , by default.

To enable shadow copies on a volume,
    * You must be a member of the Administrators group on the local computer.
    * The shadow must be enabled on the server.
    * For clients to access shadow copies , they must have the previous versions of client software installed . The software can be found in the% windir% \ system32 \ clients \ folder twclient .
    * The software may be distributed or deployed via Group Policy , Systems Management Server, or you can create a share so that customers can download the necessary software.

You can enable shadow copies through the Computer Management console which can be accessed through the Administrative Tools folder . The shadow copies are activated from the Shared Folders folder in the left pane of the Computer Management console . To navigate to the folder Shared Folders , expand System Tools . To open the Shadow Copies dialog box , right-click Shared Folders , select All Tasks , then click Configure Shadow Copies option in the menu . This is where you can manage and configure volume shadow copy functionality.
