unsure "No Device" message on WinXP

I am not sure where to direct my question. I have a Dell desktop with Windows XP as my OS, and I just got one of those cricket modems so I can go online and check on email, play games and what not. I downloaded the software so I can connect, but when I plug in the modem, it says "no devide". Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this problem? It works on my BF's laptop computer just fine. All my USB's are working as well, it just won't let me "connect" so I can go online. Anything will really help, and I thank you in advance

It looks like you either the cable is poorly connected or you computer is not able to detect you hardware device. Go in the computer manager and there select the device manager, check it out whether the device you connected is listed if listed then just Right Click on it and click on update driver make sure that you have the driver CD in you CD/DVD drive or you are connected to Internet.
