Can I install Exchange 2003 or 2007 in Exchange 2010?

I was working on Exchange 2007 and now I am willing to work on Exchange 2010. I don't know whether it is possible to transfer everything to Exchange 2010 from previous version. I thought that someone hanging out there must be knowing about it. So please inform me that can I install Exchange 2003 or 2007 in Exchange 2010? I am expecting some detailed information form your side as soon as possible.

If this is a pristine environment of Exchange 2010 (Exchange organization that consists only of Exchange 2010 servers and has never implemented earlier versions of Exchange), the answer is no. If you moved from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2010 and Exchange Server 2007 and finally retired, the answer is again no. You can not install Exchange 2007 later in this organization because it is now considered a pure Exchange 2010 organization.

If you plan to move from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010 and already prepared the Active Directory forest by installing Exchange 2010, again you can not install an Exchange 2007 server in the organization. By the way, you will receive a warning that mentions this when installing the first Exchange 2010 in a pure Exchange 2003 organization.

The installation notes that you can not install Exchange 2007 in the organization after preparation by installing Exchange 2010.

So if you think you need an Exchange 2007 server at some point, you must maintain an Exchange 2007 server in the organization after moving from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2010. Or, if you are moving from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010, you must deploy an Exchange 2007 server in the organization before preparing the AD forest by installing Exchange 2010.

Because Exchange Server 2007 was developed before Windows 7, its tools are not supported on this operating system. The Exchange product group chose to focus their efforts on Exchange 2010, which of course it is compatible with Windows 7.

Regrettably, software development is always subject to budget restrictions and resources, and they obligatory some limitations when Exchange product had to make a decision about providing technical support to install the Exchange tools in Windows 7. An imperative contemplation was the fact that approximately 65% of all Exchange customers are still using Exchange 2003 and go directly to Exchange 2010. The resolution is to install Exchange 2007 Service Pack 3 clients with Windows 7. Yes, you heard right. Based on customer feedback, the Exchange product group has unfaltering to launch Exchange 2007 SP3 in the second half of 2010, which will add support for installing Exchange 2007 tools on clients with Windows 7 and Exchange 2007 on Windows servers Server 2008 R2.

Re: Can I install Exchange 2003 or 2007 in Exchange 2010?

In preparation for a planned migration from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2010, installed a lab environment with two separate Active Directory forests. The origin AD forest contains Exchange 2007 organization and the destination AD forest contains Exchange 2010 organization. I seem to recall that when I performed a migration from Exchange 2003 forest to Exchange 2007, the organization destination is not necessarily required that the user accounts in Active Directory have already migrated to the destination AD forest. After trying to move some mailboxes from Exchange 2007 forest to Exchange 2010 organization, it appears that the movement of mailboxes from Exchange 2010 forest to behave differently to the equivalent of Exchange 2007. Can you explain how to move mailboxes between forests when you use an Exchange 2010 organization?

You are correct that the movement of mail between Exchange 2010 forests do not work as they did in Exchange 2007. As indicated, the Move-Mailbox cmdlet in Exchange 2007 is not necessarily required to migrate accounts from AD to AD forest before moving the associated mailbox. The Move-Mailbox cmdlet in Exchange 2007 checking whether there were any AD account in the AD forest destination address coincides with any proxy (SMTP address), Objects (masterAccountSID, objectSID and SidHistory) origin or legacyExchangeDN (x500 address registered in the object user). If there was a coincidence, was enabled mail account in the matching AD AD forest destination. If not found a match, the Move-Mailbox cmdlet creates a disabled user account with mailbox-enabled AD.

With Exchange 2010, things have changed. First, the Move-Mailbox cmdlet is no longer used. This cmdlet has been replaced by the new modern cmdlet New-Move, which, incidentally, brings several improvements pretty good. In addition, when you move mailboxes between forests through the cmdlet New-Move Request, Exchange 2010 user expects to find a valid e-mail tries to match the home has a target account by msExchMailboxGUID. Unlike Exchange 2007, not try to match a target account by the attributes mentioned above. This means that before you can make travel between forests with Exchange 2010, you must provision the AD forest users mailing destination.
