Not able to enable resident shield in Avast

I have a desktop and it is been installed with Windows Xp. The problem is with the application that is Avast antivirus. The problem is that the resident shield is not active. Please do let me know how it needs to be functioned or work. It will be helpful and I can make the desired change that is needed. Hope to get a better solution and thus I can make it active by then.
