Avast 5.0.594 not able to function well

I have a desktop machine and it is been installed with Windows XP. I have installed Avast 5.0.594 application. The problem is that when there is no network connection I am not able to work or process with the application when been clicked or activated. Also the behaviors shield is not working. Please help me out so that I can make the desired change to be worked.
