PC tools manual update not functioning

I use a desktop machine and the problem is that I am not able to get the things to work well for me. I have no idea what could have been the issue. When I log to PC tools for making a manual update. So when I process click on smart update the process is unable to execute well. I have no idea what could have been the reason that it is causing or behaving in such way. Please do help me out so that I can make the things to work well. The system is loaded with Windows XP.
