If you do not want to use your remote control with itunes and want other applications responds to the remote even when itunes is in the foreground, you can use the following command in the Terminal application to completely disable support for remote itunes:

    HTML Code:
    defaults write-app itunes remoteEnabled-bool NO
If itunes was active during the execution of the command, you must exit and restart itunes for the change to take effect.

If you have disabled the support for remote controls via the Terminal and must use a remote control with itunes, you can reactivate the management of remote controls with the following command: defaults write-app itunes remoteEnabled-bool YES. If itunes was active during the execution of the command, you must exit and restart itunes for the change to take effect. If you have not disabled the support for remote controls before, you do not need use the command above.

iTunes must be running on your Mac or PC to connect to it remotely. The function of iTunes preferences " Look for iPhone and iPod Touch remotes " should also be enabled. This setting is enabled by default, but you can check it is enabled in the Devices tab of iTunes preferences. It can pair up to five remote, either with iTunes or Apple TV. If this limit is reached and it is necessary to assign a new Remote, delete pairings remote in iTunes or Apple TV. On iTunes, click the Delete button remotes all contained in the Devices tab of iTunes preferences. On Apple TV, choose Settings> General> Remote Controls.

If you enable a firewall on your router or your computer, make sure the firewall does not block communication between Remote and iTunes or Apple TV. Remote uses TCP port 3689 and UDP port 5353 to communicate with iTunes or Apple TV. To configure your firewall to add these ports: For Mac OS x 10.5, you do not have to modify the port addresses, but make sure the firewall was not set "Allow only essential services" as described in Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard.

If you use the remote with Apple TV. When you use the Apple Remote with Apple TV, check the following:
    # If you've paired Apple TV and Apple Remote, make sure you use the paired remote.
    # If you use the paired remote and the status LED on Apple TV flashes white, the problem is not the remote.
    # If you use a remote non-paired, the status LED on Apple TV flashes orange.
    # If you've paired Apple TV and an Apple Remote and you can not find the paired remote, set Apple TV to work with any remote by holding the Menu and Previous / Rewind buttons for six seconds.
    # Point the remote directly at Apple TV.
    # Check that no obstacle is in front of the infrared receiver in front of Apple TV.

When using the Apple Remote, check the following:
    • You use the remote within 9 m of the computer.
    • There are no obstacles between you and the front of the computer.
    • You head directly with the remote end of the lens toward the front of the computer.
    • Your computer is on and is not in Suspend mode of operation.
    • The "Disable the infrared receiver (used by the remote control)" is not enabled in the Security pane of System Preferences.
