    NVIDIA 190.53 on Ubuntu 9.10

    Hello,
I went from Ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10 and I have to recompile the NVIDIA 190.53 drivers manually. During the trick, when I'm in console software Nvidia could not compile the module because an instance of the "X server" is active?? I however, remove anything that comes from Nvidia. By a ctrl + alt + return arr, to kill the X server, reboot it under Ubuntu but the console does not change anything. Any help on this is highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Ubuntu 9.10 with NVIDIA 190.53

    Hello,
You have to avoid having an instance of current X server. Check yourself from all your sessions, open a text console (Ctr-Alt-F1 or F2 or F3 ...), logged up and type:
    Code:
    sudo / etc / init.d / gdm stop
    or else also tried:
    Code:
sudo rm / tmp/.X0.xorg (I think, little doubt about the file name but you'll find it in / tmp)
and relaunch the install driver and see if they work correctly.

    Hello,
I do have a similar kind of a problem when I upgraded my system from ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10. Well that's what I do and after starting the driver, it does not compile yet ... well I stop gdm. I will try to suppression. X0.xorg. And if not, removing xserver- xorg-core by synaptics?? but it seems a bit hot and risky? If you have any solution for this then please let me know. Thanks in advance.

    Hello,
Under / tmp, the file is hidden. You did well ls-al to see hidden files. The exact name (I just checked) is / tmp/.x0.lock. There are other drivers in download.nvidia.com , the 195.36.x. Though I have not checked them. Have you installed the packages necessary for compilation? There are Linux-headers and one other I think but I forgot, but you can easy search them on internet. What is the error you get, please post it.

    Hello,
Yes, in the console. You spend as root:
    Code:
    sudo xterm and su -
In the console root, you put in / tmp:
    Code:
    cd / tmp
    Here you type:
    Code:
    ls-al
This command (with the-a option for all files, including hidden-those that start with '.') will show you all the files. The one to delete. X0.lock starts with a point and are not visible without the-a option of ls.

    Hello,
I tried the 195.30, the same symptom
    when I do:
    Code:
    sudo / etc / init.d / gdm stop
    I have the following message:
    Code:
Invoking init scripts Rather Than-through / etc / init.d, use the service (8) utility , eg service gdm stop
I read the doc, you can boot into safe mode and type "telinit 3" but I have problem rights to go my / home / login. I have changed them to / login but can not be accessed under the console. In fact the only directory that I access in the text console (ctrl + alt + return) is / tmp, and tmp in safe mode seems to be empty, so no access to run.
