Vista backup & restore will not work

Hi there, I wonder if there is anyone out there who can help as I have lost all my files/photo's.

I restored my HP pc back to the factory conditions as it was slow and unstable. Before doing so, I used Vista backup to save my files to an external drive.

When I come to try and restore the files, Vista can see the external drive, however does not recognise that the backup files are there. I have checked them and they are there, all 176 files.

I have tried checking regedit to make sure there is a profileimagepath to C:user\simon and it is there ok.

The message I get is that Windoes cannot find any backup sets, system cannot find specified file 0x80070002.

I was also getting cannot find specified file 0x80070002 error message and i had tried out many solutions but none of them worked out for me then i had referred the below links and i was able to overcome from message, i am sure it will work for you too.

Killer, thanks for your response. I have tried the registry trick and the cfs, all to no avail. I am not sure where to go now.

Is there somethign I can buy to get me out of this Windows hole?

I cannot seem to get hold of Windows - They do not seem to see this as their issue, more a revenue opportunity. Do you know how to get in touch with someone who will help?

I think there must be some file of the OS is missing that is why the Windows vista is unable to restore or back up. So to get rid of it you need to run the system file checker. For that just get into the command prompt from the Start > Run> type cmd and Right click on console and select the Run as Administrator. Now type sfc/scannow. This will correct the problem of corrupt file on OS. Also check the below link that has been discussed about the same issue.

I tried the sfc/scannow on both the c:\windows\system32 and the external J: drive where the backup files are held - No errors were found.

I tried creating a log as per the chain you sent, however non was created when I ran backup/restore. To be fair, I am at the limit of my PC capabilities here and I am reluctant to dabble in the registry too much.

Out of interest, i tried running a backup (successful) and then a restore of the latest backup, again successful so the program is working. It just cannot seem to see the earlier backup done before the system was re-installed.

Is there a way of getting the old backup entered into a registry somewhere to trick Windows into thinking it has been carried out during the current system load?

Then it seems that there might be some issue with your Operating system copy because of which you are facing such kind of issue in that case i would suggest you to download a fresh copy of Windows Vista and then try to backup your system i am sure in that case you will not face any issue .
