Smart tag technology provides the ability to recognize data that you specify in Microsoft Office programs. Office offers below, in the access to actions relating to the data. To develop smart tags, you can use Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications or Microsoft Visual C + + or Extensible Markup Language (XML). The Microsoft Office 2003 Smart Tag SDK contains documentation, tools, sample code, and XML schema useful for developers who are working with smart tags.

You should keep in mind that the smart tag does not work in one or more Office programs. Verify that the recognizer is loaded by Microsoft Word or Microsoft Excel. To do this, follow these steps :
  1. Start Microsoft Office Word 2007 or Microsoft Office Excel 2007.
  2. Click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Word Options or Excel Options.
  3. Click the Review tab and then click AutoCorrect Options.
  4. Click the Smart Tags tab.
  5. Make sure the label text with smart tags check box is checked and that the smart tag is listed and selected in the list of recognizers.

You should also know that an Office program is running when you registered the smart tag. As long as an instance of Word or Excel is opened, it is possible that the smart tag will not be registered correctly with the program office. Outlook used with WordMail keeps an instance of Word open, so you should also quit Outlook when you install smart tags. Finally, Microsoft Internet Explorer may interfere with the installation if you browse a page that contains smart tags.

Smart tags can not run if they are unsigned and if your security settings set too restrictively. To check the security settings of Office, follow these steps :
  1. Start Word 2007 or Excel 2007.
  2. Click the Developer tab, and then click Macro Security in the code group.
  3. Click the tab check-ins and applications that require plug-ins are signed by Trusted Publisher check box is not checked.
Alternatively, click the Macro Settings tab and click Disable all macros with notification option.

To see if your dynamic link library (DLL) smart tag has stopped responding and is disabled, follow these steps. Do one to add protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Follow the steps given below :
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open dialog box and then click OK.
  2. In Registry Editor, locate the status value in the following registry key:
  3. HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Office \ Common \ Smart Tag \ Recognizers \ your smart tag ProgId
  4. If the status value is set to a decimal value of 1, the Smart Tag DLL locked and disabled. If the status value is set to a decimal value of 8, the DLL is disabled in Microsoft Word. If the status value is set to a decimal value of 16 disables the DLL in Microsoft Excel.
  5. Select the subkey of state. On the Edit menu, click Delete. When prompted to confirm deleting the value, click Yes.
  6. Exit the Registry Editor.
