How to prevent firefox downloading automatically

In the Windows download is a small check box that allows the browser to apply the same action for the same type of file every time. I had to check this box by mistake for PDF files and now when I go on a web link that contains a PDF firefox saves it automatically on the computer. How can I return to the state or the browser does not save it directly and offered me either open or save it?

    Hello,

It's very simple, here are 3 steps to take to resolve your pb:

1 - In FireFox, directs you to "Tools" then "Options" (in the menu at the top).

2 - In the window that opens, click on "Applications" (4th tab)

3 - search in the "content" type of file that you pose a problem, then click on action and check "always ask".

    your problem should be solved!

Do you keep a download history that has references to the Downloads folder? Tools -> Downloads . Do you see references to the Downloads folder on the about:config page?

Normally when you goes into Tools->options -> in general tab you see the location to save files below. Uncheck the location and make firefox to ask you everytime for location to save downloads.

    Thanks for the informative information.
Isn't this a security risk!?? I know the intention is to make it look like firefox has faster download speeds. Sometimes, by the time you have decided where to save your file, it has already finished downloading, making most firefox users happy.

I thought my computer wouldn't do anything without my permission if I had it set to "Ask me where to save files". so much for that idea.

Re: How to prevent firefox downloading automatically

When you download a file by default Firefox will show a downloads window showing the progress and a list of recently downloaded files, and it doesn't automatically go away after the download has finished.
If you've changed the options as per the above instructions and the downloads window doesn't show, or closes when the download has completed, or you've closed the window after looking at it, you can show the window again at any time. Select Tools and then Downloads from the main file menu, or use the Ctrl+J keyboard shortcut combination and the window will display.
