The indexing service in Windows Vista is a assortment of a better incorporated into the operating system than it was with Windows XP, and a assortment additional and supplementary useful, given the presence of the search bar. It's still not necessary though, and it still uses up hard disk and memory resources. Put out of action the indexing service does not put out of action the search or search bar purposes of Vista, but it will slow down the results a bit. Disabling it will speed the rest of your computer system up a bit, so the trade off is up to you.
