Templates in the word startup folder does loaded automatically, this problem is due to the template was not created with Word on a Macintosh computer. To resolve your problem try the steps below :

    1. Open the template on the Mac, and then save it again in the startup folder, and you may overwrite the existing template.
    2. Click on the Word menu, click Settings.
    3. Click on Personal Settings, click File Locations.
    4. Click in the column labeled File Types, click Start. Write down the path to the startup folder that is listed under location.
    5. Click OK.
    6. Click the File menu, click Open, locate the template to be loaded, and then double-click it.
    7. Click the File menu, click Save.
    8. Click the Format menu, click Document Template.
    9. Click Save.

Thus, the original template will be replaced by the newly saved version of the template.

You should download the template manually because the template was not created with Word on a Macintosh computer.
    1. Click the View menu, click Design, Page Layout, Outline, or Web layout.

    2. Click the Tools menu, click Templates and Add-ins, and then click Add

    3. Look for the template, and then double-click it.

I think the template file may be corrupt. You can try repairing it and if the repair fails, however, you can try to recover the contained text and then create a new template.

    1. Click on the Word menu, click Settings.
    2. Click the drawing tools and Proofing Tools, click General.
    3. Make sure that the box is checked to confirm conversion at Open, and then click OK.
    4. Click the File menu, click Open.
    5. Click the pop-up menu, select Recover Text from Any File.
    6. Look for the template, and then double-click it.

This may happen if the disk is full. Make sure that the trash is empty. Click in the Mac Finder menu Empty Trash. Clear the cache of your browser. Open Safari and click on the Safari menu cache. The web browser stores web pages frequently and files in the cache, which can occupy a significant amount of space on your hard drive.

The problem may be due to the amount of available memory (RAM) is not sufficient. Enter the word used by free memory. Quit Word, and then do a restart the application. Try to open the file again. Provide more free memory that is used by other applications. Quit all running applications, including Word. Open Word again and try once more to open the file.
