If you are using the Microsoft Security Essential that is the tool available by the Microsoft as freeware and you need to increase the speed of the same then i can help you with the trick that will increase the scanning speed of the MSE. If you are looking for the speed the you have to exclude the multimedia file scanning from the scan. because the file of multimedia like MP3 can't affected with virus but still the scan search for it by default. So do the same, this will make the system scan faster.

In the setting tab when you are entering the file type at that time you have to follow certain thing that work with the speed of the scan in the Microsoft Security Essential. Just keep in using the Wild card i.e. the entry with the * prefix that will exclude the complete file of the extension that you have specified with this prefix. With this you are stick with the certain file that you think are not infected so do the same to get the proper result.
