    Thumbnail preview of File not showing in Windows 7

    In order to get a thumbnail preview for the files in Windows 7, follow the following steps:

    1. At the top, you can see FILE, EDIT, VIEW, TOOLS, HELP. Here click on VIEW.
    2. Here you can see a list of views that you can set for the files:

    * EXTRA LARGE ICONS
    * LARGE ICONS
    * SMALL ICONS
    * TILES
    * DETAILS

    and so on.
    You have to select any of the 1st 3 options.
    You must have disabled the thumbnails view for the files and folders. To enable it back, do as following:

    1. Go to START, next ALL PROGRAMS, then ACCESSORIES.
    2. Now WINDOWS EXPLORER has to be run.
    3. There, select the ORGANIZE button which is located on the menu/shortcut bar.
    4. In the DROP-DOWN menu, select the FOLDER AND SEARCH OPTIONS.
    5. Now, in the FOLDER OPTIONS dialog, click on the VIEW tab.
    6. Here, the checkbox needs to be checked in ALWAYS SHOW ICONS, NEVER THUMBNAILS OPTION.
    7. Finally click on the OK button.
    I am running a Windows 7 64 bit operating system. I have done both of these and a thumbail preview of the file is still not showing up. It shows up for all of my Corel Draw (cdr.) files but none of the Adobe files. They still show up as the "Adobe" trademark icon. Any ideas?

    To get the thumbnail preview of the file, do the following things.
    • Click on the Orb (Start Button).
    • Then select All Programs.
    • Then select Accessories.
    • Then select System Tools.
    • Then select Disk Cleanup.
    • Then select your Boot drive and click OK.
    • Check the Thumbnails checkbox (make sure nothing else is checked).
    • Click OK.
    • When prompted, click the Delete Files button.

    Now check weather your problem is solved or not.

    Well, seriously speaking Windows 7 has many such problems in its working. The incompatibilities with the programs are the main problems. Anyways, have a look at the following threads, you may find some solution:

    Windows 7 basically may tend not to show up such phases. You need to clear the cache memory in order to make the thing to work out. Try it out.

    Backman, I know where you are at. I had the same problem myself where all my video files were not showing the thumbnail image but all my photos were. I have now sorted mine, they are restored to their former glory.

    You need to restore the file extensions to thier default settings. To do this go to:

    http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...s-restore.html

    and follow the instructions. There you will find the default file for each video filetype (avi,wmv,mpg etc), download-install-reboot for each type and your troubles should be over.

    Let us know what happens either way.

    Re: Thumbnail preview of File not showing in Windows 7

    IN REGEDIT:

    _ HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mov\shellex\
    where I only had 2 key inside the shellex.

    _I looked inside the mpeg shellex ( because mpeg would generate good thumbnails:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mov\shellex\
    where it had 3 keys

    _SO what I tried was to copy those 3 key and replace my .mov shellex 3 key with those.

    this is what you can do:

    -open regedit
    -right click on: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mov\shellex\
    then export it ( it will be your backup in case it doesn't work or you mess up something you will just have to click on it to instal it again.

    Then,
    - remove the "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mov\shellex\ "KEY

    -open notepad

    -paste the following in your notepad file:

    -----------------------don't paste this line-------------------------

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mov\shellex]

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mov\shellex\{3D1975AF-0FC3-463d-8965-4DC6B5A840F4}]
    @=""

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mov\shellex\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}]
    @="{c5a40261-cd64-4ccf-84cb-c394da41d590}"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mov\shellex\{E357FCCD-A995-4576-B01F-234630154E96}]
    @="{9DBD2C50-62AD-11D0-B806-00C04FD706EC}"

    -----------------------don't paste this line-------------------------

    -save it under whatevername.reg ( be sure to use "all file" kind of type file.)

    -double click on the reg file you just saves you just saved , it will reinstal the shellex inside the .mov key here:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mov
    with the right keys and stuff.

    -close regedit

    -open a folder containing your .MOV, refresh the files several times to be sure, it should be working.

    More information can be found here.

    idea Re: Thumbnail preview of File not showing in Windows 7

    Hi, i think it will help you, if you are using windows 7 64 bit OS,
    first press windows key + R, type control and then press enter key in you keyboard
    Select Default Programs
    Select Associate a file type or protocol with a program
    then here you can change file type whether again if other program have been changed your your default file type, i think you must got it now, if not
    if your video file is AVCHD (.MTS) and you are not able see your thumbnail view, just select that file type and click on change program button, and select Windows Media Player,
    See your video folder now, and you will get it back again means now you are able to view your thumbnail of that video, likeways you can change other ones
    thanks

    Re: Thumbnail preview of File not showing in Windows 7

    Try this if it hasn't been solved already.

    hit start then go to control panel in the upper right hand where it says view by make sure it says large or small icons Scroll to the bottom and select system
    Once the system window pops up select the link that says advanced system settings in the upper left hand corner then click the settings button under performance.

    Make sure there is a check mark where it says show thumbnails instead of icons.

    Hope this works.

    Re: Thumbnail preview of File not showing in Windows 7

    Ok, this same thing happened to me, and if the above suggestions do not work you can try this. Start up your computer, press F8 to bring you to the Safe mode screen and than choose the option Start Windows on Last good configuration date. If you do not see that choice in the safe mode screen, start your computer normally. Go to start menu, accessories, system tools, system restore. From their you can follow the instructions and this should bring back the thumbnails. Hopefully this works for anyone else who has this problem.
