Can't reinstall MS Office Professional 2003

After having problems starting MS Excel for almost a year (used excel viewer when I needed to look at excel files), I decided to search the forums for a solution. I downloaded the Windows Installer Cleaner utility and removed Office 2003. I have another copy of Office 2003 that I borrowed from an IT buddy of mine and used that to reinstall. The reinstall failed...the installation bar got about half way. I then discovered that sometimes all of the files are not removed and was told to use the ofccln(?) app on the Office 2003 installation cd. That removed many more files so I tried to reinstall again. This time I got much further into the installation but ultimately it failed also. I did a system restore, hoping that I could pretend none of this happened. After the restore was done, I was able to access Outlook but not other Office programs. Furthermore, the windows installer kept launching and I would get the error message "the patch package could not be opened". Since I need these apps for my business, I am desperate for a solution. All I want to do is to be able to reinstall the software successfully. Please help.

Re: Can't reinstall MS Office Professional 2003

When you are working on your computer and installing a new program, the installation suddenly fails. So, for that have you tried installing when booted in Safe Mode? For that you need to check out the following link. If you’re having problem with your new Office 2003 product key, simply double click on the backup registry .reg file created at the optional step above to restore the registry settings of the Registration subkey so that the original value can be imported back to the registry.

Re: Can't reinstall MS Office Professional 2003

Hello, as you are getting problem with reinstallation of Office 2003 on your computer with the Installation Cd which you have, you need to try for another one. You are getting the error message as "the patch package could not be opened" from windows installer, which means that your software setup is either corrupt or cannot be read by the system. So, take new cd and then try to install the MS Office Professional 2003. It will definitely install it.

Re: Can't reinstall MS Office Professional 2003

Tried to install from the safe mode but I received the windows installer error "the system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation" eventhough I have the system administrator privileges. Macarenas...this is the only Installation CD that I have. The installation process went much further when I used ofccln from the Installation CD Office11 folder to remove old Office files, than I did when I used the Windows Installer cleaning utility. Can you be sure that the software is corrupt? I'd hate to pay big bucks for new Office software and it doesn't resolve the problem.

Also, since I've had long time issues with being recognized as the administrator (happens everytime I use msconfig to make changes in startup), would this cause problems with installation? Just throwing it out there. Thanks.

This means that the admin account which you are using is not set properly that is why you are unable to install the application as Administrator. Delete the account and then make the new one. This might help you. Thank you

Re: Can't reinstall MS Office Professional 2003

I think that the installation was halted anonymously that's why some of the components of the software might have got installed so first check the add or remove programs and check for any unknown program related to the software if possible then remove that component or else delete it from the program files. Then try to install the office software i hope your problem will be solved.

Re: Can't reinstall MS Office Professional 2003

Thanks for the replies. I created a new administrator account as suggested by Ameer but this didn't help either. Same results when trying to install... it gets to deleting files and then it rolled back installation. Tried booting in safe mode and I got the system adminstrator has set policies to prevent this installation message.

Sam, I will check the add/remove programs. How do I determine which software is related to the program? I don't want to create bigger issues.

Do you think I should use the ofccln method of removing old files vs the windows installer method? I'm at my wit's end on this but this program is so vital to my business. Thanks again everyone.

Re: Can't reinstall MS Office Professional 2003

You can test your customized OPC file on a computer by running the following command:
path\OFFCLN.EXE /L!C:\Offcln.log path to OPC files\

This step generates a log of the files that your customized OPC file will delete, without actually removing any files.

For a list of command-line options, run OFFCLN.EXE /?.

Re: Can't reinstall MS Office Professional 2003

Sam, I apologize for not being computer savvy but I'm trying to get an understanding of your instructions. What is an OPC file, how do I test it and what will the test results show me other than the files that will be deleted? When I ran OFFCLN from the installation cd, it displayed a list of files that would be deleted also. I tried to run that command line from the run menu but got an error message. I just wish that they would tell you why the setup failed which could go a long way in troubleshooting. Does the OFFCLN and Windows Installation Cleanup utility remove items from the registry?
