    Disk Cleanup tool stops responding

    Hi,

    Anybody know an issue where the "disk cleanup tool" not working on my windows xp pc? At least for C:, but for D: is working fine. It hangs when calculating disk space will be freed. What should I do now ??

    Hi,

    Try Cleanup manually, delete all files in the current user's Temp folder, and then delete all temporary Internet files of the user. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. Click Start, click Run, type% temp% and then click OK to open the Temp folder.
    2. In the Temp folder, click Select All from the Edit menu, press DELETE, and then click Yes to confirm you want to send all items to the Recycle Bin.
    3. Click Start, click Control Panel, and double-click Internet Options.
    4. On the General tab, click Delete Files.
    5. Click to select the Delete all offline content check box and then click OK.
    6. Click Start and then click My Computer.
    7. Click the drive you want to clean up, and then click Properties.
    8. Click Disk Cleanup tool to run the Disk Cleanup again.

    Disk Cleanup is a utility that you temporary files, you no longer use, you can delete the folders on your hard drive. If a file can not be removed, sometimes not responding Disk Cleanup. This can happen when a temporary file is used by another program or a temporary file or folder was corrupted. To this problem, delete the files manually. Follow the steps in this document. When Disk Cleanup stops responding, restart the computer before you will perform the following steps.

    1. Close all open programs and internet connections.
    2. Click Start, Run and type% temp% in the Run box.
    3. Click OK to the Temp folder. NOTE: If the Temp folder does not appear, then the directory is corrupted and you need a new folder name. Windows XP browse to C:\Documents and Settings\(your login name)\Local Settings\and change the name of the Temp folder in the tempoud. In earlier versions of Windows, browse to C:\Windows\temp. Enter the Temp folder then rename. Restart the computer when done.
    4. Click on Edit and Select All to select all files in the Temp folder.
    5. Press the Delete button and then click Yes to all items to the Trash to move.
    6. Close the window of the Temp folder.
    7. In Microsoft Windows XP, click Start, Control Panel and double-click Internet Options.
    8. In Windows 98 and Me, click Start, Settings and then Control Panel and double-click Internet Options.
    9. On the General tab, click Delete Files, select Delete all offline content and click OK.
    10. Close all open windows and try again to perform Disk Cleanup.

    Disk Cleanup tool stops responding or hangs. This problem occurs when an incorrect entry in the register for Disk Cleanup is used to search for compressed files. An incorrect use of Registry Editor can cause serious problems that may occur if you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
    To work around this problem:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit and click OK.
    2. Click the following registry key:
      Code:
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VolumeCaches
    3. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
    4. When you are prompted to remove the key to confirm, click Yes.
    5. Close the Registry Editor.
